Default 6.5 x 284 with Hornady 143 eld x

Putting a 6.5 x 284 in a long action , throat being cut for the eld x seated to the base of the neck. Will be interesting to see how it performs.

Default Expectations

What are you expecting out of it? I was shooting yesterday with a fellow that has one and he was consistently ringing steel at 1000m with his. I think he said he was getting about 3000 fps with his shooting a 140 berger. I should add that we had a 10-15 mph gusty windy day so it was pretty cool seeing him get hits. I was shooting my 6.5x47 and not doing that great with it. I got a couple hits but nothing like his consistency.

Hope near the 3000fps. It’s not my rifle I’m putting it together for good friend.

I built a 6.5-285 on a tikka action, and shoot the 143 Eldx. I’m right at 2900 FPS with it and very pressure signs. I got up last 3000 FPS but backed it off due to accuracy falling off. The 143 eldx performed great on 3 deer so far and lots of steel too!

Default 6.5-284

Custom built Husky 5000 action with Benchmark Barrel

52.5 GRs RL22 with ELDX 143 gives me 2940 FPS and under .5 moa ! RJ

A few years back when I was developing loads for my 6.5 EXTREME, with the 140 VLD jambed 0.010", I had the opportunity to test it alongside a 6.5 284 Norma in a 24" barreled Savage. Bergers Max load was 57.6 grains Retumbo with a COAL of 3.219" giving 2770 fps from a 26" barrel. I was surprised that the 140 Vld was jambed 0.010" into the lands of the Savage and even more surprised that the 24" barrel got 2958 with the 57.6 Max load and gave me a 0.44" group. However the Nosler brass was stretching 0.003" at the web the primers were flat and ejector marks marks were beginning to show. I went up to a Full case of Retumbo at 59.0 grains and did get over 3000 fps as my notes show.

I found that I could hit over 300 fps with the same combination in my 6.5 Extreme with no brass stretch and very little pressure by comparison. My 6.5 EXTREME has been copied by the 6.5PRC which is likely a better cartridge to run the 143 ELDX. RL 26 may prove me wrong. Here is a drawing showing how they compare:

I use 57.7 gr with a 5 thou jump to the lands. 1/4 moa and very consistent
215m primers worked best for me also
I could get more powder volume with br2 but not as low of an es

If you compare the drawings I posted of the 6.5- 284 with the 143 ELDX seated to 3.1 COAL you will see that it is likely throated the same as the 6.5 PRC which has a 1degree 30 minute throat angle and 0.1879" Freebore. Likely done with a Reamer the same as the Grizzley Industrial-T23207 reamer shown in the following link. http://cdn0.grizzly.com/specsheets/t10182_as.pdf
It has a 1 degree 30 minute throat angle and 0.188" Freebore (LEADE) at 0.2645" bore diameter with 0.219" of throat from there to 0.253" bore diameter or 2.604" from the Bolt face.

In order for you to seat the 143 ELDX with the bearing surface in the neck, and 0020" off the lands, you will need a minimum of another 0.082" -0.100" freebore or about 0.270" FB with the same throat. The only problem with this is that if you want to run the 140 VLD seated to the lands the bearing surface will be out of the neck or in other words you will have to run it about 0.100" off the lands in order for it to fit into the neck as shown in the drawing I posted.

Default Love it

Built a semi custom wildcat,

weatherby action and a benchmark barrel

Loaded 56Gr of retumbo on lapua brass with 215 mag primers, 143 eldx were 2925 at the muzzle.

Have shot great out to 800 yrds, haven't had too much time to play with it farther but I built it for a hunting rifle so I am pretty confident it will kill.

Great experience all in all.
