I haven't been fishing long enough to know this, but does this happen every summer? or is this summer just a special case for all the algae blooms in all these lakes?

Well that might nail shut the lid on a slow fishing season.

Fertilizer washed down from farmers fields due to heavy rains are supposedly a major contributor to this, combined with warm water.

Usually the shallow and really warm water lakes get hit. The # of lakes getting it this year seems to be higher than usual.

Hmm... that seems weird, wonder how much of that was political.

Short news story of phosphorus runoff and algae bloom in Lake Erie.

Some of the comments below the story are more interesting.

Blue green algae is an algae that forms in many shallow slow moving or still lakes.

Many of these lakes have a blue green algae bloom every summer because of their make up. You can still fish them and there has been no evidence to prove you shouldn't eat the fish although for precautionary reasons some people will tell you that.

You shouldn't swim in and definitely shouldn't consume water with blue green algae though as it can potentially be toxic.
