I've been keeping pond fish for 16 years now
If you want to see the yard ponds just do a quick search under my user name for threads mentioning yards and gardens

When I lived on the coast, I had a landscaping business. One yard that we reworked had a bird bath looking thing at ground level. When I dumped it a half dozen little carp spilled out. I put them in a bucket and took them home.
I set a 10 foot diameter fiberglass satelite dish in the ground, and got it working with a pump, plants, etc. Dumped the fish in and waited, The fgish grew to about 8 inches, bred in that pond and chnaged from a brown color to mixed colors. When I moved to Alberta, my wife sold a bunch of them.
I left them in the pond over the winter and they seemed to do quite well under the snow and ice. There were a few dead ones in the spring, but not many.
