Default Tinitus !!

Has anyone else had to deal with Tinitus that you may have some secrets on how to deal with it. looks like working in a loud industry for many years and firearms have caught up with me.
Anyone who does not know what its like , well a constant buzzing in your ears that never stops...

I suffer from it severly and have hearing aids especially designed to help. It's a long story with mediocre results. Mine is sometimes managable and sometimes wildly out of control. There is no cure or treatment but if have lots of ideas on how to manage it.

For me its a matter of Mind over matter.
I refuse to let the ringing take over.

During the day I like to have soft music to focus on, instead of the ringing.
At night I use a fan for white noise. Plus the sound of the cpap is also there.

White noise; a soft hissing sound is one of the more common ways to deal with it. There's something like hearing aids that you plug into the ear to help ignore the ringing.

Don't have it myself, but every now and then for no reason at all I'll go deaf on one side and that damn ringing will start up. Happily it passes after a few seconds, but I'm always expecting it to start hanging around.

Default You get used to it

It has different levels for different people. I can tune it out most of the time,
but when I think about it and listen , it can be as loud as a smoke detector in my head. My day to day is OK I dont notice it and at night when trying to sleep I can get past it. It was bad when I first realized I had it when I was 20 or so I could not fall asleep, it kept me up alot.
Now after reading your post I thought about it and it is loud right now.
But the most difficult part for me is when I am fishing or hunting, the quiet
always brings it up. I have not had a day in the woods without it for 15years.

I have it to one thing i can tell you is don't get sucked in to all the different remedies you will find on the web,you need to learn to live with it IT IS NOT EASY but if you don't it can consume your life, hearing aids helped me quite a bit, download some different types of white noise for getting to sleep etc.Try to avoid real quiet enviroments(sounds dumb I know)there is no cure or treatments if it is from hearing loss due to loud enviroments shooting etc.Good luck and be strong,it has been 3 years for me and I still have a hard time.

Default good luck

I started in the late 80s after working on the rigs before hearing protection was made a must. after 25 years I sometimes dont even notice it sometimes its so bad A guy cant concentrate. There is no know treatment that works lots of witchcraft stuff they claim works. Hearing aids are marginal, Tinitus can get so bad balance can be effected.

I spent 27 years in the Army and I've had it for as long as I can remember. I suppose that there may be varying degrees of it but I've just kind of gotten used to having it. If it bothers you too much then I'd seek medical advice or check the internet for a support group but, for me anyway, it's just something that I've become accustom to. Having a conversation with someone when there's allot of background noise is a bit of a problem but other than that I don't have too many problems.

springer,
i ring too!
i use those earmuffs from canadian tire in the boiler room, (like a walker game ears) that shut out the 85db and louder.
but its still too little, too late.
I also find that i get a sore throat from yelling at people cause i cant hear them.
i find a little releif by saturating a Q-tip with hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2) and dripping it into the ear canal.

I've had it for about 6-7 years now and it really sucks. I have 4 tours overseas and as you can imagine things are not quiet when you're "conducting business". You can never really totally tune it out but I found that using either a fan in the summer or a noise machine (like what you can get for a babies room). Use the "white noise" setting (TV used to make that "shhhhhhhhh" sound). If yours is bad enough, like mine, you may have to get some meds to help you sleep some nights. For those that don't know what tinnitus is or what it's like, imagine having a mosquito buzzing in your ear forever. If you don't want things getting worse, you have to start wearing hearing protection any time you are at work or around loud noises. Once it starts, it is really easy for it to go down hill fast.

I had a very minor case after clubbing a couple months ago, only lasted a week (acute rather than chronic).

I found that when i turned on a tap I couldn't hear it at all, so any type of white noise, as stated many times, should help a little.

Thank God it went away. I am a lot more careful about my hearing protection now.

Wow ! Thanks for the support everyone. As you know how difficult it can be to deal with. I have always worn my hearing protection at work , at home when working in the garage etc. A few years back when it was recognized i ensured whenever i mowed grass or anything i started wearing ear protection.

I work shiftwork so i have always used the white noise mask and the setting for rain or waterfall , running water or whatever seems to be the best . Yes i look forward to sleep now for a mental repreive from it , but as soon as i awake its right there to annoy me first thing.

We do annual hearing tests and i was sent to an audiologist for the loss of hearing and a WCB claim has been issued for hearing loss , but at the time it was only a mild form of tinitus and i never thought much of it.

After lots of research on the web , i sure do see how many military people that suffer from it and i bet the sufferers may have thought twice if they had any idea this was in their future.

Obviously I am not the only one now by all the responses.

Boy do i rag on my boys now about wearing hearing protection and their loud music..

If anyone comes up with a method to help out please send me a PM. I will do the same if i find anything in my research.

Default Hearing damage...

Guys i like when you share your stories regarding tinnitus... and when I am encouraging young people to watch their hearing many don't understand the ramificiations of hearing damage.

They think that the worst that can happen is that they will go deaf and not hear anything not realising that the reality is that the hearing damage will probably manifest as tinitus and when that happens now you have to manage the symptom and that there is not a cure for the damage.

We live in a world of noise, it is only getting noisier and it also affects our stress levels, so when you finally find a quiet spot and relax... you can't appreciatte it because of the tinitus which is a shame.

When i was young i had an audiogram and saw that I had decreased sensitivity to one tone and was most likely from shooting a rifle as it was only in my left ear... so I have been pretty careful ever since.

I lost both eardrums once and was deaf for a week and rang for a yearbut fortunately they healed and I enjoy great hearing now... I am so protective of my hearing now because it was horrible.

These stories reinforce the importance of protecting hearing now as the damage is cumulative and manifests years later... imagine not being able to hear your grandson catching his first fish!...

My ear nose and throat specialist said to try taking the following as it may help, I know some days are worse than others, some white noise does help. He recommended, Ginko Biloba, Garlic, Zinc and Vitamin D, daily

Tinitus is bad, for me it was guns, chainsaws, and loud open air bulldozers.

I don't know how you'd get the info but the lead singer from metalica did some clinical program where you listen to noises other than the range that causes that major irritation on a continous basis and I guess it helped.

The less loud noise the better, I usually ear plug and muffs when doing anything super loud these days.

I have had it since I was a child.

Your brain will eventually turn it into white noise.

Be nice if they found a cure already.

Same here left ear real bad, went to an audiologist and she said it was hearing loss due to loud environments, guns etc. Some days are worse then others seems to get worse when I'm sick or tired.

I haven't found anything that helps it. If you do find something please let me know!!

I have it in both ears from an accidental firearms discharge in a basement years ago. Been dealing with it as best I can.

Depending how bad it is a hearing aid might help.
