We were out sunday. new black ram 2500 3 dog kennels in the back.

It was so darn hot monday evening, we chased partridge in the evening. A rainstorm rolled by and cooled it down about 6pm.

Only seen 3 coveys but the dogs sure enjoyed the run and the old boy Diego was happy he got to retrieve the first hun of the season. Just GSP's yesterday, left the setter at home. Poor guy would have ended up with heat stroke.

How did you make out?

Sunday, we found quite a few partridge coveys. Seen lots along the hiway too. We only did 2 walks before it got to hot out (our first was opening hour) then after that we visited landowners. Monday we didnt do to bad on the grouse. Coulda been better but with how little wind and how much land to cover, we just ended up following the dog around the forest lol. Pretty tough with a high flying gsp. But it was nice to get out of the house lmao

Proud poppa tonight. Bird busted wild but Wyatt completed with a nice retrieve to hand before I let him parade around with it.

the pup looks good. you guys are lucky we're still waiting for the opener in ON. I hope birds did OK in AB with all the flooding.

My buddy Drake.....unfortunately had to have him put down last summer. Mostly a waterfowl hound, but loved to run the prairie as well. I think I am almost ready to turn the page and start a new chapter.......I would appreciate any comments and/or suggestions on an upland dog. I am looking for info on breeds, breeders and I don't mind spending some money. I have 2 youngish kids, so family qualities are extremely important to me. Also, wife wants something a little smaller (Drake was 110 pounds lol).

Hi Hoagie, Sorry to hear about your hunting pal. The last time that happened to me I packed it in for a couple of years because I never thought I would get another dog as good as my last one, but luck has favoured me twice in a row and my new gal is just as good..in fact I would have a hard time if I had to choose between them. but I digress...I would recommed you try a Spinger Spaniel...but make sure it is from field stock.
I have been hunting for longer than I care to admit ,( I got my 1st hunting dog in 1966 ). My first four dogs were labs and I was a dedicated lab man until someone gave me a little Springer female when I was dogless. I think my Springers have been better than 3 of my labs. The other good thing ,the females are smaller around 42 lbs.... They have both been my wife`s lap dogs & I get a lecture from her ever time I go hunting about being careful with her baby...Sure makes life easier when your wife likes your hunting dog as much as you do.
They both have been very easy to train, are excellet retreivers , love the water and will hunt till they drop. The only negatives compared to the labs is the coats aren`t as heavy and they have a hard time carrying a big canada. I used to hunt down on the bow river in the late fall but I wouldn`t put my Springer in the that late seasom cold water.
I guess you can see I am sold on them by my Handle. Good luck and if you want more info let me know, good luck finding a dog !!!SPGRMN

We're still waiting - but not long now. Went for a walk - the little one backed her mom for the first time! Woo-hoo! At least we're making some progress...

Thanks for the info all. Vizlsas, I will pm you for sure. I know nothing of the breed, but am open minded. I am also looking at Brittany's (if anyone has a favorite breeder I would appreciate the tip) and having a long look at a Llewellin Setter. Seems to be an impressive hunting dog and great with the family......I also like the fact they are fairly uncommon. If anyone has had any experiences with this breed I would love to hear about it.

they are wild barn pigeons-- but if you coop them up they will stick around after a while.

Saskatchewan opener,
On call today so cut it short, glad to get out, lots of sharptail which was nice to see. They were all in the tree rows, so no good pictures. Ones that flew the right way were too small and spared. Overall a good day.

Got Kiva out for a hunt the other morning. We got into a few coveys of Huns and managed a limit in a short time. She is coming along fine for a young dog; she impresses me.

I was shooting a PH Grade Parker that I bought off Cat a couple years ago. The shotgun has Twist barrels, so it requires Black Powder loads. I have a few boxes of BP that my uncle loaded with plastic wads, but they leave a coating of melted plastic in the barrel.

The other day I get a note from Cat asking for my address. A few days after that, a couple boxes of BP shells loaded with nickel plated #7s showed up! For those of you who don't know, CatintheHat is a classy guy!

Note the paper hulls marked "Black Powder"... makes it easy not to screw up. THANKS CAT!

Here are a couple from today, ridiculous wind today but fun to get out nonetheless. Took both dogs out, figured it was a good day for exercise anyway.

Nope - no upland. We had one covey of partridge and two coveys of sharpies swing by to check out the spread, but they flared just outta range. Not sure what it was, but something spooked them. Maybe it's time to buck up and buy a new sharptail call. Then again, I'm pretty much out of practice calling upland - no need any longer with the reddogz in tow.......

The PP lives in a town outside of Saskatoon. He comes from a kennel in Quebec. From what I understand, their lines are closely related to Bob's - Cedarwoods (if I've got his kennel name correct). Very nice dog!!
