Have u heard anything about "arctic armor" by I.D.I. Gear? I read about them about two years ago on the Minnisota ice fishing boards. They are a seperate jacket and bib style flotation suit similar to that of a Mustang, but with a lot more mobility and flexibility.
I spoke to a sales rep prior to purchasing one, and he told me that they are so comfortable and easy to move in them, that u could play a round of golf wearing it. Having now owned one, I would probably tend to agree with him. They are super warm, too warm in fact for the ice tent with a heater, and very comfy. Plus, its a flotation suit.
Their website claims that the type of insulation/foam used in the suit is called insultex. The same stuff olympic teams use in athlete suits, due to its insulating properties and light weight. Apparantly 8oz of the stuff can float like 250lbs of weight. The jacket and pants are so thin, u wouldnt believe it has foam inside and is boyant. I have tried this personally in the summer jumping into the river and have absolutley no fears about ever sinking. The ad does what it advertises.
Obviously it is designed to float. It is not a "survival" suit like a Mustang, in that u can restrict the water entering the suit by sealing the arm/leg straps pulling them tight, keeping your actual body dry. You will get water next to your body (as opposed to a 1 piece survival suit) but you will remain boyant. Hopefully long enough to pull yourself out of the ice water before hypothermia sets in.
I wanted a decent built suit for ice fishing, and for the $300 or so dollars I paid, I not only have a wicket cold weather suit that feels like a light weight fall jacket and pants, but it is also a potentially life saving piece of equipment. I called around and at that time, the closest dealer from Calgary was in Stettler. If you decide to buy, make sure you try it on first, as the sizes are geared more for the overweight "American" body styles
so they fit bigger than expected.
Hope that helps anyone looking for ideas for ice fishing
