Vanilla may work so might fish but not all bears attract to fish smell. If you are not going to "bait" you just may want to do a honey burn. Takes awhile for bears to come to it but sure does smell nice

Feed store molasses is cheaper.

Might have misinterpreted the OP, but your friend might wanna try using something the bear can eat mixed with vanilla extract. Just pouring out a bottle on a cutline probably won't keep a bear around long…… might sniff it for a couple seconds if it happens to walk by.

Best way is to dig a big hole. Put some wood in the bottom and light a nice fire. Let it burn down to the ashes. When the bear comes by to see what's down there, you kick him in the ash hole.

We used to live trap bears in ontario - vanilla extract in an atomizer sprayed in the trees and shrubs around the trap was by far the most effective way of attracting bears to the trap

We all ways used molasses for scent over a bait, last year we found a deal on old chips from a factory for bait, works good. How ever last year I allso went down to run for a outfitter in Maine, and he had some caramel stuff ( can't think of the name) that you would ad a cap full to a 5 gallon pail of used cooking grease. This stuff had a strong and nice smell to it. That is what where gonna try this year, it worked great for him.

Artificial Vanilla extract in vegetable/canola oil.

Fill a spray bottle or three and make several radiating scent trails leading to your blind/stand. A bear walking by from any direction, regardless of the wind direction, will cross the scent trail.

Even more effective than vanilla is a dirty diaper.
What's up with bears and diapers?
