Default Last shoot of the 2013

Whos all heading out for the final day of the 2013 waterfowl season tomorrow?

I was pleasantly surprised at the number of birds hanging around.

We hammered them east of lethbridge on Thursday.
5 guys, 40 geese.

I bet we saw well over 1000 geese.
It was COLD!

you guys are hardcore. congrats. i never even thought about waterfowl after my last hunt (deer) on dec.7 though i doubt there are many up here in the frozen north with 3 feet of snow.
i also can believe how cold it was.

well me and my bro only killed 6 honkers this morning. cold and no wind, so they were sky high and looking hard for any flaws in the set up. Geese definitely flew late though. Didnt see or shoot the first bird till 10:30am.

Default Great end to the day!!

Took my daughter, the pooch, and a new student .. They did ok!

Finished with 11 down.

Could have done better, but the sun worked against us and the birds came in about 60 degrees from where I thought they would.... So my setting wasn't working to our advantage.

Took alot of flagging and calling to get tbem to committ.

Lots of flairing. Dog got a great workout.

Now it's time to oil the guns and put em away.

Sorry, only got the one pic.

Today dad called me to go out with him later in the afternoon...I got ready and the young pup was bouncing around, cannot wait to get out ... I look over to the beginning of my dog hunting career and here is the old girl at the age of 13+, she has a hard time walking around she stumbles easy and can not hear a word I say ,,no doubt because of all the muzzle blasts she has gotten in her years of hunting,, she has retrieved over 5000 birds in her life..many people have said you will not have another dog like her.....so this hunt was about Dad and the old girl, we set up the decoys and sat back a pair of green heads come in and Dad with two shots crumples them both , the Old girl has a jump in her like a four year old pup, she heads out and slips her back end drops and I run out to her, she gets up and tries to make it thru the fence,, in about 6 seconds my life went thru 13 years of the time we spend together and the tears started to flow....knowing this was her last retrieve.

We got the first bird for dad and I walked over and got the second one and walked her back to the truck,,she took her time, smelling and enjoying being out in the field, we got back and I lifter her in the truck, she sat and looked out at Dad, and we talked...she curled up on the seat and I turned on the seat heater for her ,,,she was so .....relaxed....

Default That's not me

It's my oldest daughter and our lab.

She was just coming down with a cold/flu, she insisted on going.
I was very proud of her , especially since she was knocking down late season geese with her 20guage!

She's in bed right now with a fever.

I'm In the doghouse with the wife...

Time to get the ice auger out I guess.

my wife and i have a female Siberian husky...not much good for retrieving, but none the less she is our pet...she will turn 13 this xmas eve...she had a a fairly good life...lots of running and playing together....she loves the winter and the deep snow...maybe not so much anymore....

we can relate to you and your retriever on the idea that this might be her last winter with the submarine in the deep snow and the frosty whiskers on her face... take care junglejay...
