Default Solution for Feral Horse Invasion

Hello:
It seems there is a lot of talk about the Feral Pig in AB., but not the Feral Horse??? They number in the 1,000's +. They are a threat to are Natural Resources, Property damage(car wrecks),and Personal Injury or Death.
Does any one have opinions for a solution?
No one seems, to want to, be held responseble. Eg. F&W, Gov't,. The only ones making a stink are the so called do gooders! Yet they do not want to be financialy responseble for them. Or for that matter feed them when they are starving!!!!
For what it is worth there are no true Wild Horses in Alberta, they all come from miss cared for domestic stock.
Please let us keep this discussion intelligent and mature, in the hope we together can come up with a viable solution.
Regards: Evil72

Yes. But only if they are attacking you which is quite common with feral horses.

I agree, now what will we do with all the feral humans .they number in the millions . if a "wild" native human were speak up we could resolve this issue.

You know... elk and horses seem to get on with ine another quite well.
Some would argue that horses actually benefit the elk in many ways.

Last I had heard there will be no capture permits issued this year. With the deep snow they are coming out on the main and log haul roads and will be thinned out by Kenworth Ltd..

I hear that wolves have been taking down alot of elk in the mountains. I wonder why wolves do not go after the horses.

Wolves have been eating elk, moose, deer for how many thousands of years? Instinct, training etc....

Horse has been around for a couple hundred years at most. They haven't learned to hunt these animals. Which would be a bad thing for ranchers if wolves started learning that livestock is lunch.

All the problems Australia has with Feral [ abandoned livestock] House cats decimated the flightless birds.Same as donkeys preventing desert bighorns from using waterholes in the US. Repatriate them back into captivity or remove them.Harold

If you use this as an argument to get rid of the horses, just think of all the other species that you'd have to get rid of.

Could do without them IMO. Should have tags for them and make a season where they can be hunted. There's enough European hunters in our province I think a lot of people would be surprised that there'd be a demand for them. Many European countries are big in horse meat, not saying I'd touch it with a 10' pole, but to each their own.

the problem with this is if you missed they would crap themselves so bad, (meaning all the feral humans)
the grizzly's still wouldn't have anything to eat

Default Feral Horses & Elk

Guys, when the snow is deep elk and deer unable to dig down and get enough grass to offset energy expended. Elk will follow horses and eat where they have dug down to the grass. Leave the horses alone.

Romantic notions aside, horses get ridden and eaten. Although I've been guilty of keeping horses that have outlived their usefulness, they are still livestock. I wouldn't look down on anyone that sends an animal to the plant in Ft. McLeod nor would I be opposed to a cull hunt for them.

Funny, never observed that, in fact the horses have the cutblocks all to themselves, except for a few deer. Nothing wrong with having some feral horses out there, but we've got to have a handle on their number and if that means slaughter, so be it. We're not afraid of culling other species when overpopulation demands it. Wolves tend to keep the foal population down, but Mr. Studley does his part to keep his girls and their offspring safe.

Problem being once the F. Horse has finished eating ,there is not much left for the Elk. Not to say the Elk do not use this to their benefit! Do what you can with what you have.
Thanx for the input: Evil72
