Ive been looking at the Spot/Garmin/PLB. The way I look at it Im buying this device for the most part in case of an emergency. So for that the PLB works the best and is also the cheapest when looking at all the plans. With the price savings in not having to buy a plan for the Spot or Garmin, I can rent a SAT phone for the amount of time I spend out of cell phone reception each year by myself. For me personally I dont mind packing the extra wait to have a SAT phone and PLB.

We have used the garmin and then just recently got the SPOT X. The downfall of the garmin is there is no keyboard. You have to scroll through the letters when sending out a text. upside is it seems a little more reliable and faster to send and receive messages.

The spot x has better packages and easier to type using the keyboard. The downfall is I am just not as comfortable with its reliability. It does get the messages out but there is a longer delay than the garmin. We are using it again on a sheep hunt this week so we will have more feed back later.
