I'm heading out this weekend to a spot that usually holds some elk. any tips on early October hunting/calling?

Will they respond to Cow Calls?

Hard to answer really depends on the area and the amount of pressure they have already seen. Also depends on the predator pressure they get. Some elk are still vocal whereas others won't say a word.

I have had some luck with calf calls later in October. Beware though, May have had more predators then elk come in.

It’s defiantly still on in October. In fact I’ve killed my biggest ones mid month. (Not that big)
Last year I was chasing coyotes on December 1 and the elk were going like mid September.
The changes that I’ve seen are that they are less gullible and they are grouped up more. Less stray satellite bulls checking things out. Also they are into new food sources and leave fields in the dark.
It’s still very doable but more chalangeing.
