Default Eye Relief; Spec vs Actual

Is it normal to have different (less in this case) eye relief than listed in the manufacturers specs?

Recently when shooting I felt the scope touching my head when shooting off a seated bench with bean bag rest. Kind of thinking it was my flip up scope cover because it was just a touch, no pain. Seemed to be on my forehead more so than my eyebrow. I don't think I had the cover flipped all the way back.

Thanks.

The listed eye relief is at the lowest power IIRC, as you go up in power the eye relief changes.

Unless the scope has a constant eye relief, which is all that I use these days.

I seem to be getting less than spec on both low and high power

It's a Nikon monarch 3. Manual says 4" at low and 3.7" at high power. Wondering if my mounting needs to be adjusted.

If that's a Butler Creek cover, it was the cover!

I had two different Butler Creek ocular covers and both did that to me. I replaced the first thinking it was a bad spring but the second one did it too. The springs didn't have enough tension on them I figure.

I bought a pair of Tenebraex flip covers (clear ones) and am so happy with them I'm going to put them on all my scopes.

I notice on my pricier (Swarovski) scope the eye relief is greater than I get off a cheap Bushnell Banner scope. I don't recall offhand what the spec for eye relief on either was but I suspect the Swarovski's pretty close to the spec listed for it.

Are you measuring from the lens, or from the eyepiece? The eye relief is measured from the lens.

I did check right to my eye. Numbers are better. Stills feels damn close at 16x.

These ones came with the scope (Nikon). I had them just flipped up before and they do fold back further. I will be trying that next time for sure!
