I've been doing a lot of research about floating traps and I read that it's better to use grey, aged wood rather than new wood. One article that I read suggested that if you use new wood, it's better to give it a light spray of paint to dull it up. That could possibly be why they are avoiding the traps.

I'm making 6 floaters for my 120's this morning and hopefully put them out this afternoon.

i've actually started putting leg holds on the platform/entrance. and connected almost every time. so their getting up on them. they have weeds/reeds covering the plywood.

it would seem they just don't feel the need to enter the above water cage. no matter what type of bait/lure i've tried. still trying to perfect them though, and haven't given up.

New floats I made , I just doused with a good coat of that black sloppy mud from area where I am setting . I think it probab ly covers some scent as well and cuts the glare from new wood for sure .

I shot a couple a few days ago. You could hunt them on the bank where they are taking in the sun I guess but mine were swimming. I'll just say this.....it's tough to hit a swimming rat's head at +/- 50m so take a bulk box of bullets with you.....lol! Setting up onshore with a rest and shooting them like you would gophers would probably work very well where I'm trapping and I may do that if the winds calm and the sun comes out.

You'd probably be better of setting up on the bank Bill. It's hard enough hitting them standing offhand let alone when you're bobbing around in a kayak. It took me 30 rds to get 2 rats....lol.

As long as you're enjoying that's the main thing though.

I used 22 short mag low velocity last year and they worked great. I found the range was not great though. I also noticed my prices were not really hurt at all from it as well. Maybe try long rifle solids and then you got the range and will not blow them up either.

I'm using Remington "Target" loads (solid point). I didn't even see where the hole was on the two that I shot. No mess other than the blood.

I shoot every one I can when I'm running my traps I shoot solids LR shells I avg 13.21 on my rats so shooting them really don't make much difference. Shoot away I say

right on davesilva! you've got the photobucket thing figured out. i/we like pics!

cloths pins are very helpfull/nice when using the wire stretchers.

another usefull thing is some wire mesh. too hang/dry your rats. screws work too.

just throwing that out there, in case you hadn't seen it. both are garys ideas(pretty sure).

Just curious, what purpose are the clothes pins serving?

I've never used wire stretchers but I would assume the nose would slide off easier than wood. Thus, the clothespin would be used to keep it in place on the wire stretcher?

Yeah wire stretchers work good you don't need
a bunch of tacks like
On the wood ones and they're easier
To hang to dry the clothes pin idea is for holding around the head and sides so it forms good yes

clothes pins hold nose in place and hold sides in place and even,as size matter's in the rat game, putting a smaller looking rat on a wire stretcher can get you enough to make rat into next size level, also picked up from GARY G at rat course, nice pic's guys,Peter

You guys are way ahead of us, i'm still waiting for open water. Could be another week or so hopefully. Temp at -8C and fields are still snow covered.

Good pic Braggadoe, want to build a couple floats yet.

I must be right in between weather wise. The snow in the fields is gone but only the edges around the lake are thawed and the water in the ditches has started to recede. I'm hoping for another 2 weeks before the bite marks start appearing.
