Default Mossberg 500 18.5 inch barrel

Is the short 18.5 inch barrel that comes with the Mossberg 500 package only good for home security or could it be used for hunting rough grouse? It should throw a good open pattern of # 7 1/2. Has anyone used one for grouse? If so, is it effective? Just wondering as I bought a 500 as a back-up/spare gun and it comes with the extra barrel. I have heard of a 20 inch coach gun being used for grouse. Certainly, it allows for easier movement in trees.

It would work fine, you just have to remember that the range will be less. Just take it out and do some practice with it so you can see what it'll do

If your in the thick stuff it's awesome. Yeah I have the 20" coach gun and would use 12-16" if they made it. ( in a double ). I would like to try a 8.5" pump and see what the noise is like hunting.

Sounds like I should give it a try. Now, if I can only locate some grouse.
