Default Elk on the ground

Well I went out today to see If I could harvest a Muledeer with my longbow. Went and checked one of my trailcams and sure enough there were muledeer on it. Was trying to decide what I should do for the evening hunt when I spotted a cow and calf elk in the same field that I was in. I had an elk tag in my pocket so decided to try a stalk on them. The wind was coming from the north and they were in a bush that I could approach from the south. I drove my truck to the far side of the field so I would not spook them and got out and did a stalk on the bush. I was 15 yards from the bush and could hear the elk mewing and milling about. All of a sudden I heard a branch break so I stopped and knelt down. I was head to toe in ASAT leafy wear. About 10-15 seconds later a calf elk came out at 15 yards from me. He was broadside to me but I could not draw, he took two steps to my left and offered a quartering away shot for me. I drew back and released the arrow and hit him right where I wanted to. He took off and the bush exploded with elk, There were 10 elk all together in the bush. He only went a little ways before piling up. This is my first Big Game with a longbow other than bear, I am so happy I can hardly contain myself. We should have some really good eating this winter from him. I guess now I can go after my muledeer tomorrow.

they dont make them in the right spine for my longbow. I shoot 600 spine arrows off of the longbow and they only make them in black unfortunately

Nice going! Elk is my favorite game meat by far. I've never had calf elk, but I do know that calf moose is a LOT better than a full grown moose. That calf should be pretty tough to top for table fare.

Good for you! Being a fellow longbow "hunter" (I've never harvested anything yet, but have tried) I can appreciate what you've accomplished. That should be some excellent tablefare.

Thanks

I must confess tho I am a compound shooter usually, but I got told by some longbow and recurve shooters us Compound shooters dont know how to really shoot, because we need training wheels. the couple of guys kind of put a thorn in my side and I have picked up the longbow and been shooting it since end of june. I have went to 4 3d shoots and won first with it against them and now this is just icing on the cake. I reallly truely enjoy the longbow and I am finding it more fun all the time, so much fun that I am not using my compound this winter to compete but using my longbow.

R E R makes some nice bows. Have you seen the new VPA broadheads?
http://peteward.com/2009pages/Test.VPA.html
They are just what we have been waiting for . I am shooting the 200 and 250 grain screw in, I just heard they have a 300 grain out now.
