Default Vintage Chain Saw - Question Solved - Looks Like A Hornet

Our family normally shares some old stories and pics about the good old days over X-Mass.

At 91 years, Grampa Z-z the fellow in beard, recalls he was one of the first guys to bring a chain saw into the bush camp in Red Lake, Ontario in either 1956/57.

We found this old pic, Dad no longer remembers and was wondering if anyone has an idea of who made this beast? He said it was heavy as hell, but it could cut through those big white pine's in no time. Looked on the net, couldn't find anything, how technology has changed.

Any ideas?

Not sure of the saw brand but with the rope starter pulley on the back of the motor should make it easier to figure out. You don't see many with the rope pull on the back of the motor. Because the pic doesn't show the tip of the bar it is hard to know if it is a two man saw. Ask your grandpa.

If grandpa is 91 and the pic is from 57 ... grandpa is 34 in the pic. nice keepsake.

There are chainsaw collector forums online. Try posting the pic there.

Google Goggles phone app might identify the saw if you post the pic there too.

Default Chainsaw

They seem pretty happy with that beast, it must have been a heck of a saw for the time

I'll bet it beat the alternative.

Tks fellas for the info ... will try researching the other recommended sites, from the pic, it looks like it has dual blades so this may be easier to identify.

Aren't old pictures just fascinating!

Looks more like two separate saws than twin chain bars. I see 2 fuel tanks.

My dad used to have a IEL that looked a lot like that, the engine would only run setting straight so the gear box with the blade on it rotated 90 degrees.

This guy would probably know: http://www.wheelersmaple.com/chainsaw/

They are in Lanark County, Ontario. There is quite the collection there. I believe they are all operational too. I browsed in his chainsaw 'museum' for a couple of hours one day; lots of cool old stuff. I sure wouldn't want to wrestle some of those old beasts around though!

Both saws are obviously the same brand, but I looked at pics half the morning and can't find an identical saw!

I'm thinking Lombard. There are 2 saws in that very cool old picture.

Long enough ago that they may even be WW 2 surplus military saws.

I'd hate to be the poor guy on the bar tip handle on one of those beasts.

I think that I found it: A Hornet chainsaw made in Guelph, Ontario in the 50's.

About half way down there is a vid and description.

I'm impressed, lots of good leads, many tks for the effort guys, when I have the time I will investigate further.

This morning the Mrs had her Mercedes stolen while she was Boxing Day shopping in Red Deer ... that really sucks, will put up another thread.

It sure looks like a Hornet, tks Tundra Monkey & Jim PS for taking the effort, it's greatly appreciated, and I'm sure if my Dad had more of his memory he would tell us more stories about working in the bush camps in the Red Lake area, while my Mother and Grandfather looked after the farm and kids in Elma Manitoba.

As well tks for all the other posts.
