Lafarge Exshaw is always looking for HD mechanics (they are a union company) and plenty of schools in the Bow Valley but housing is pretty expensive.

Close to the mountains and close to lots of work opportunities as well Rocky and Red Deer not too far away.

Caroline, like all the places on the road from Innisfail to Rocky, is becoming very prone to theft and sketchy characters.
But something tells me that's the norm everywhere these days.
We've thought about relocating there ourselves. Just a gateway location to every resource that nature provides.

We recently looked at Hinton. Cost of living seems to be ok for being so close to the mountains. Should be lots of job opportunities for a HD Mechanic with all the oil field, mining, forestry, and rail out that way.

I lived in 3 BC towns and Quesnel had the best seasons, not too hot not too cold. I’m guessing Williams lake would be the same and possibly better. Not sure on the work.

Williams lake is pretty rough, especially if you live right in town.

It would be hard to find any negatives with Nelson other than it's a little more expensive than other areas.

Default High River

High River, lots of schools between High River and Okotoks. Good hospital, 1/2hour to Calgary, an hour to some of best fishing and hunting in the province.

Devon is a small town with small town attitude and everything you need. One of the best paid school boards in Alberta. (my daughter taught there and loved it) Edmonton is 25 minutes. Airport 15 minutes. Nisku and lots of mechanics industry within 30 minutes. Local hospital in town and world class medical care within 30 minutes in Edmonton. The North Saskatchewan River is next to the town of Devon for boating and great fishing. A few fishing lakes within an hour or 2. Hunting is within 10 minutes on private lands and 1.5 to 2 hours to crown land hunting. 3 to 4 hours in any direction puts you on totally different terrain, from forest to mountain to prairie to parklands.

From what I have heard, Nelson is full of "granola crunchers" and not very friendly to the hunting community.

I would love to move back to Alberta to be closer to my daughter and her family, in particular my grand daughter. Sylvan Lake would be one of my choices as easy access to the west country, but close enough to Red Deer for anything I could not get in Sylvan.

I also like the Okotoks area - smaller town, seems to have everything, and close to the big city for anything it lacked.

Now just have to convince the better half that it would be a good move

Lot's of nice smaller communities in the area as well.

Definite shortage of mechanics and teachers.

Then you heard wrong. Plenty of people hunt and even more hunting opportunities. Great outdoorsman club and range.

Of all the places to move to , Nelson would be the bottom of the list. (visit during the summer & you will understand)
Only thing I'd like from there are cuttings / seeds for Blue Elderberries.

How many Albertans migrated to B.C. during the same time?

The only two things to come out of Caroline are figure skaters and sister daters.

Caroline is on the decline and I think was recently absorbed by Clearwater County. I'm not sure I'd want to live in town but there are many nice places around Caroline.

Every town in Central Alberta has a shop looking for mechanics. Lacombe, Ponoka, Rimbey, Bentley, Innisfail, Olds, Sylvan are all close enough to Red Deer for commuting to work, reasonably close to either Calgary or Edmonton, and within a couple hours of the mountains.

Congrats trout bug on your new life ,lotsa places to pick from, as long as you both are happy that's what counts . Takes balls to move on in life ,many stay and ruin both lives ,so I wish you all the best .

HD guys are always wanted these days so take your time since you have a whole new life ahead . The chopper ride was a classic ,even showed this to my wife of 39 years ,no one else would take me now so I'm stuck HAHA with her ,not at all .Looks like your young enough to put in 39 more years ,not hard if you both really care for each other .

Cheers

I've never had any problems hunting in the area, but then I've never had any issues anywhere I've hunted. For sure there is a "granola element" to the Nelson area, but since I ski, bike, hike, and like to drink good coffee, and eat good food, as well as hunt and fish, it doesn't bother me in the least. To each his own.
Which reminds me that I do have a couple of Whitewater ski passes that need to get used up so I should head that way in the next few weeks and tire out the old legs.

You really need to make a personal choice on what is the right fit for you. My advice is take the time to do some major research on all positive and negative aspects

Personally I would avoid BC due to political issues, the lack of political voice for those outside of the lower mainland. the lack of infrastructure outside of southwest BC when it comes to education/medical, cost of living, hunting opportunities are declining, the future uncertainty due to the level of unresolved FN issues, one of BCs major industries forestry is declining majorly, and I could really keep going but really BC is a poorly managed province

I left for the reasons above and more. I have was born in BC, lived and worked in multiple regions of the province so my opinion is not based off of just one area. I know a lot of people who have also left BC for the above reasons and others who are working on leaving. I have family who really enjoy BC and said would never leave in the past putting serious thought into it now

Do as you please but look at everything before you choose
