Default Hearing loss and ringing

Long story short is my hunting partner let loose a quick two rounds with his 300wsm in very close proximity to me six days ago. I usually wear ear hearing protection but did not have them in as we were eating lunch.

I have had a ringing in my ear since and it seems like there is a cotton ball wedged in there. High pitched sounds now seem really loud and I think I'm having issues hearing low pitch sounds.

Will this go away? Has anyone experienced this before? What treatment options are there?

Thanks in advance.

I would get to a doctor pronto !
Sadly, I don't know if it will go away but I don't think so.

Sounds like the concussive force from the rifle may have caused a fluid build up behind the ear drum. Go to a doctor and hopefully they can drain it before there is any permanent hearing loss.

I have tinnitus and hearing loss due to multiple similar situations over a period of years. I'm not sure if you can develope it from a single event but I suppose that it's possible. Initially you get the ringing but it goes away, kind of like when you go to a rock concert and have the ringing afterwards. I don't know what you might have with the cotton ball thing going on and as mentioned it'd be prudent to get it checked out.

I have had tinnitus for about 10 years sometimes good sometimes bad. You learn to live with it. Having the radio or tv on helps when you are at home or in a vehicle. The worst is when you are sitting alone in a stand or blind and your ears are ringing when it should be perfectly quite. Hope yours goes away.

A POP (PSV) valve in a pulp mill got me, it was lunch time I had just taken out my plugs when the steam valve starting screaming. The next morning I put a plug in my right ear and realized I couldn't hear anything out of left ear. The doctor told me the sound had caused my ear channel to swell up blocking it off. I had reported the incident just after it happened to safety onsite mostly because it was an intentional test however it was 10 minuets earlier than they predicted.
I suffered a permanent hearing loss and to this day my left ear rings (tinnitus). After 4 years of testing and letters the WCB awarded me a small settlement, it was the first time the Saskatchewan WCB had ever paid for a hearing loss. I was just lucky a month before I was working in BC where hearing tests are mandatory my hearing was just tested for comparison after the incident.

Same thing happens to me but only lasts a day then goes away, the ringing lasts a week or so then mostly goes away. Been like that for 30 years. I try to never shoot without hearing protection but during hunting season I usually get exposed to a gun shot or two. Need to get me one of those electronic ear muffs so I can have them on at all times.

I often wish it would just stop for maybe a hour just to see what absolute silence is like. Some even commit suicide because of it i guess. When it started 30 years ago it affected my balance for quite a while but you have to get used to it. It dont get better.

Ive had it in one ear for 30 years and a few years ago the other one started up. I would pay huge money to get it fixed. But seeing as the noise is being produced by the brain and coming from the inside i doubt they will find a cure. Even if you went totally deaf to outside noise you will have the ringing. Ive tried most everything over time. Hearing aids help a bit but you dont sleep with them on so night is still real bad.

Mine started a few years ago. I went to a specialist who said my ears looked fine. I don't seem to have hearing loss but am going for a hearing test at the U of A in Feb.. He also sent me for a CAT scan to make sure it wasn't vascular. Tests were fine.
Next, to a neurologist in January to see what he thinks.
It bugs me sometimes and sometimes it seems worse than others but I've learned to live with it.
I just want to rule out anything serious.

I'm pretty sure that it started after firing a 20" .243 ONE time. It seemed particularly loud in my left ear that I really noticed it. Although in my younger days I didn't take care of my ears so much, in later years have always shot with ear protection. That day I was wearing ear protection except for that ONE shot.

Too many rock & roll concerts, headphones with LP records on a 'stacker', and then days in the duckblind with a buddy with a short-barrelled browning.

Low frequency sounds and a tiny bell-ringing sound drown out everything else, but at least I now have a doctor's note for ignoring my wife......

I don't realize how much I lip-read until someone covers their mouth or turns away when speaking with me. If they speak relatively slowly, and enunciate every word, I'm OK. Volume doesn't matter very much. Strong accents or background music or fans running shut the conversation down. I love Subway's food the communication in there is just too difficult!

My biggest regret is that I miss hearing the birds sing now, and my deer hunting ability has dropped along with my ability to hear movement in the woods.

Sux get'n old, but sure beats the alternative.

So for everyone else reading this.. Even if it means spending hundreds on electronic earmuffs.. Don't hesitate.

I sure hope this ringing stops, but I don't think it will.

On the other hand, I don't hear whiny kids, I can get a good nights sleep in a hotel room with a party going on next door, I have the perfect excuse to skip 'cocktail parties' and any other function I'm not keen on attending, and if a meeting isn't well chaired, I just get up and leave because I can't hear or contribute over side conversations and audio clutter. It simplifies my life somewhat

H-aids may help reduce but not eliminate the ringing.

When your in a room filled with people and trying to listen in to what some of the soft spoken women are saying, you'll find yourself nodding and smiling alot.

Try those orange ear plugs when you go to sleep, they seem to help muffle the noise and help me fall asleep quickly.

Tinnitus here too. Started two or three years ago, intermittently at first, then all the time. I dunno why exactly, I've always been careful with my hearing and wear hearing protection in the shop or the yard. Took a few concerts in my teens and early concerts, but less than half a dozen in total.

Doesn't bother me a ton, I hear it but seem to be able to push it into the background. Occasionally, I have difficulty falling asleep because it's louder than usual. Mostly though, I miss total silence.

Not really much you can do for it, no terribly effective treatments. Definitely worth having audiology testing, which you can access through self-referral at you local health unit.

Haha! Me too! I'm still in deer camp and when I phoned my wife last night, I told her that it was so quiet here that " all I can hear is my ears ringing"!

Default Wife says I am deaf.

Can't hear in noisy rooms.
Love my loud loud loud music.
Hardly ever wore ear protection.

Audiologist says I "need to employ better listening strategies " and that I have excellent hearing for someone with my exposures.

Deaf.

Protect your ears like you do your eyes.

I wish I had been smarter about it.

Shot my rifle once last year, left ear rang for two weeks then went back to normal.

This year I've fired 3 shots without hearing protection, and I've been fine!
