I will second the Excalibur vote. Been running with their products for many years. They are very simple and easy to work on, and despite having the best warranty in the business, they are damn near bulletproof. I have killed literally dozens of critters with mine.
Depends on what & where you are hunting as to which model to look at.
My current (and likely last bow I will ever need) is one of their Matrix 380's. It has been discontinued, but looking around you'll find one for a reasonable price. Picked one up with all the bells & whistles for a buddy at 750 clams just a short spell ago.
I have a permanent crossbow permit for Alberta myself (due to a rather bad shoulder).
