Sniper rifle hunting
Does anyone hunt with a sniper rifle or sniper crossbow? Would be good for big animals like moose and elk and deer, but could still work on smaller animals like geese.c

Explain what a sniper crossbow is?
Are you referring to a rifle or cross bow with a scope on it?

A crossbow that has a sniper scope on it. One that makes things bigger. Some come with one as a package.

I am aware of the functions of a rifle scope, lots of people use crossbows to hunt but you can only use them in rifle season NOT archery season. I am assuming your sniper rifle comment was referring to a center fire rifle with a scope mounted on it. Most people use scopes in center fire rifles.

Interesting concept. You'd love to have one do you, but a sniper xbow does not exist. Yet.
I used to do long range shooting with a scoped crossbow, but I could not go farther than 110 yds using a scope because of the ballistic of an average bolt. Past this range, it's like shooting with a mortar. I had to use a HHA Optimizer to be able to reach that distance, along with a custom string. Scope I use is a 2-7 VX2 from Leupie, xbow is an Excalibur Exomax. Mind you, my rig looks tacticool. But you won't carry it all day long before having a bit of a strain.
If you want to reach insane distance for target shooting, you should check this thread. to see this guy's work. It's a lot lot of work but he somewhat pins arrows up to 500 yds.
It's in french, but this video sums it all.
Check those one too:
http://www.aventure-chasse-peche-vid...ar-Yves-Nadeau
http://www.aventure-chasse-peche-vid...ière-tentative
http://www.aventure-chasse-peche-vid...-2-de-2-réussi
http://www.aventure-chasse-peche-vid...ir-à-500-pieds
You CAN NOT hunt with a xbow farther than 40-50 yds. Bolt is too slow and the noise will alert the animal and it will move, cancelling your placement and starting a mess.
Except in b-movies, videogames or in The Walking Dead, there is not such a thing as a sniper crossbow in real world, even the PSE TAC-15 is limited by the inherent nature of a crossbow.
Sorry to crush your dream.

Mosin Nagant is a sniper rifle that packs a wallop for $200. You can mount a scope on it and voilà, here is a sniper rifle able to take down anything up to a 1000 yds*!
*YMMV

I think a sniper crossbow is not something that actually exists, as its not something a sniper would actually use (being less efficient/ more prone to windage issues/ lacking range, etc). Its splitting hairs, but I'm trying to assist you in not getting teased on the matter. Really the term 'sniper rifle' could apply to any heavy barreled target rifle with a large scope, but generally most hunters and target shooters don't use the term as we don't want the public to relate our hunting pursuits to the killing of humans which the term 'sniper' generally seems to imply.
As for hunting with a sniper rifle, one would assume you mean a heavy barreled model; these are not ideal for anything but still hunting due to their weight. Typically a person adept at shooting will not need a multitude of shots to down their quarry, so the long strings of fire afforded by a heavier barrel lose their lustre when compared to a regular barrel profile that will be accurate for as many shots as a person proficient with it will need. Most rifle hunting kills are sub 250 yard shots, which is where hunting and shooting diverge. A hunter can close the distance to his quarry, and this demands other skill sets in addition to just good marksmanship.
Also, I suggest that you check the hunting regs, one cannot use a rifle of any sort for hunting geese.

Might want to check out the regs on migratory birds as you can not use a crossbow or a gun that is shooting a single projectile to hunt geese. And before I get told that a shotgun can shoot a slug so the rule is flawed there is several threads beating this to death.

Yes, you are just starting out?, Slanging of at a long standing member, with a legitimate question,
please explain what a sniper crossbow is, I have no clue?
And what you, concider a sniper rifle to be.
I had a WW2, von hofman, 30-06, set trigger, 4 power scope, used as a sniper rifle, from my granddad's, friend. Is that what you mean, or something more.
At what distance does long range hunting rifle, become a sniper rifle?

I saw a myosin nagan that looked nice and had a sniper scope on it. It looked old though. Starting out with guns and hunting seems very confusing.

You can use a recurve or a compound bow to hunt geese with a single arrow....

Sorry what? I sort of quit taking this post seriously at "sniper rifle". Generally only the very uninformed tend to toss around that term.

Geese you cannot use a single bullet
Alberta Reg's
GAME BIRD
It is unlawful to
1.hunt game birds during an open season for male pheasants within Designated Pheasant Release Sites after 2:00 p.m., except Saturdays.
2. possess, before it has been transported to the usual residence of the person who killed it or is prepared for immediate cooking, a game bird which does not bear evidence of sex and species. Evidence of sex and species consists of one completely feathered wing attached to the carcass of the game bird, except for Merriam's turkey for which evidence of sex and species consists of the complete head and beard attached to the carcass (click here to view Merriam's Turkey tagging instructions).
3. hunt a migratory game bird using •a firearm loaded with a single bullet
•shot, other than non-toxic shot,
•a cross-bow•a shotgun that is of a larger size than 10 guage.
4. hunt any game bird using •a shotgun in which the magazine and chamber combined will hold more than three rounds of ammunition,
•a trap, or
•bait.
Note: see item 12 (below) for additional restrictions for hunting Merriam's turkey.
5. have more than one shotgun, for personal use, at any time while hunting migratory game birds unless each shotgun, in excess of one, is unloaded and disassembled or unloaded and cased.
6. hunt game birds in WMU 410 with other than a bow and arrow or falconry bird.
7. hunt game birds in WMU 212 or 248 with other than a bow and arrow, a cross-bow, shotgun or falconry bird.
8. exceed the daily or possession limit for any game bird (click here to view Game Bird Bag Limits).
9. hunt game birds within 400 m (1/4 mi.) of a baited lure area operated under the Crop Damage Control Program.
10. transport migratory game birds belonging to others unless the carcasses are affixed with a tag showing •the signature, name and address of the owner,
•the licence number under which the bird was taken, and
•the date the birds were taken.
11. fail to make every effort possible to immediately retrieve a migratory game bird that a person has killed or wounded. A hunter must have adequate means to retrieve any migratory bird that he or she may kill, cripple or injure.
12. hunt Merriam's turkey using •a weapon other than a shotgun, cross-bow or a bow and arrow,
•a shotgun with a bore diameter smaller than 20 gauge, or
•shot size smaller than No. 6 shot or larger than No. 2 shot.
13. remove the tag from a Merriam's turkey until authorized (click here to view Merriam's Turkey Tagging Instructions).
so the answer is no
on crossbows yes they have sniper crossbows (scoped and accessory's)
http://www.thecrossbowstore.com/How-...sbow-s/101.htm
Yes lots of hunters have equivalent to sniper rifles

Pretty much. Other than saying that a rifle used by a sniper is a sniper's rifle, the term really has no meaning. It's usually used by someone that watches too much of the tactical nonsense on television.

Bigmoosemurphy. Either you are genuinely starting on the ground floor or you are trolling. Take the hunter's ed course. Take your PAL course. Buy a .22 bolt action rifle and learn to shoot. Be aware of what it means to respect nature. And if you go out in the woods to practice with your .22 recognize that respect starts with absolute zero footprint. Pack out everything you bring in (that includes brass). Along the way you will learn what you need to learn and others will help you. Asking questions is never bad. Just keep your questions to the point.
And a word of advise: don't use the expression sniper anything. It has no place in the woods. Call of duty does not teach you how to shoot or hunt.
If you are trolling don't expect to live much past 30 posts.
