Camping at Freeman lake, Swan Hills

I know there is a campground there, but according to my iHunter most of it is crown land. Can you random camp around there?

I'm looking to go in a few weekends time and the campground isn't open then from what I have read. Also, I prefer to random camp

Lots of spots to camp in and around Virginia hills and freeman lake area. It’s basically all crown land.
