Rainbow trout
CAn you catch rainbows with anything else besides small spinners. I am fishing the local trout ponds near Edmonton so they are small. I have only tried spinners.

try fishing a small leech pattern under a slip bobber or spring bobber. brown, black, and green all work good. my kids catch fish with this set-up all the time on stock ponds and lakes. you won't loss all your expensive spinners either on the bottom. it works well, give it a shot.

spin fishing i presume.
Stocked ponds i've caught them on (most fish only 8" big) :
-Small rapalas, size 5 or smaller,
-mepps/panther martins
-pickeral rigs with all sorts of bait
-under a bobber -> with: bait, powerbait dough, small jigs, small ice fishing hooks, flies,
- tiny cranks and spoons, - 5oD, flatfish, hot'n'tots, lil cleo's... etc
basically anything small CAN work, just have to find out what DOES work wherever you're at. Trout can be very picky. But you're definitely not limited to spinners. Sometimes you only need to get your line out 5 or 10 feet from shore, so even though these hooks are light and don't cast well, you often don't need a long cast. add a splitshot if you need extra distance.

you mean that you can use flys on a spin cast with a slip bobber? Do you reel it in or let it sit for awhile?

Doesn't even need to be a slip bobber. I often will just have a regular bobber (double wrapped so it doesn't slide) on my main line, right above a splitshot to add some weight, then a foot or two below that i will have a fly, usually on mono or fluoro leader. I keep it short enough that I can still cast when the bobber is near the tip of my rod. Let it drift if water has a little chop, or give it a couple cranks every 10 - 30 sec if its calm

think like a fish...........move it, twitch it. you want your fly to mimic the real thing. in this case a leech. they just don't hang around in the water looking dead. it takes very little movement to get that marabou on the fly moving. make it swim. make it alive.

Like Crusty said,
spin with torpedo float and fly.
They are sometimes called casting bobbers that you can put water in to make them heavier. They have a rubber tube inside that your line goes through for spin casting. They don't tangle your line up as much as a red and white bobber. It also helps to have lighter line and there are knots that are ment for different flies / hooks. I also fish in the Edmonton area and go for rainbows. They are difficult to catch at times.

Or you can let them sit still, hence catatonic leeching, wich can be dynamite when fish are not being aggressive

Love sitting in my chair watching a bobber. I use bead head nymphs under a bobber. Sometimes ill use a dry fly with one of those casting bubble bobbers you can fill with water, just use some floatant.
Why dont i just use a fly rod? Too much casting(false and otherwise) for a old guy with bum shoulder. Gets me too cranky.
