Default Good news on Game Enforcement

Really glad to see this. Good job F&W!!

Only wish the fines were even bigger and the suspensions at least ten years.

Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement

Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement recently concluded a major investigation that has resulted in $63,590 in total fines and 31 years of combined recreational hunting licence suspensions against 13 individuals.
The investigation started in early 2017 when Stettler fish and wildlife officers determined that numerous people were hunting with an Indigenous person, who has a constitutionally protected right to hunt, in an effort to disguise their illegal activities. In a number of cases, the wildlife that were harvested were either out of season or were hunted without the proper licences. This included elk, mule deer, white-tailed deer, moose, and antelope.
Officers also determined that the meat of some of the illegally harvested trophy animals were trafficked. In one case, an American from Kansas was also unlawfully guided on a moose and antelope hunt.
In 2019, 13 individuals were found guilty of numerous Wildlife Act offences:
Donald CHORNOHUS was found guilty of unlawful possession of wildlife, and was given a $4,500 fine.
Tyler Dean ERICKSON was found guilty of two counts of hunting without a licence (elk). ERICKSON was fined $5,000 and had to forfeit a trophy antelope shoulder mount.
Larry LEE was found guilty of hunting wildlife during a closed season (antlered moose and trophy antelope) and hunting big game as a non-resident alien without an outfitter-guide. LEE was given a $6,000 fine and a 4 year recreational hunting licence suspension.
Natalie Lynn LEKSIW was found guilty of three counts of unlawful possession of wildlife (elk, moose and mule deer), three counts of hunting closed season (elk and antelope) and one count of hunting without a licence (mule deer). LEKSIW was fined $5,000 and 5 year Judicial Order prohibiting hunting or accompanying anyone hunting.
Shannon Orest LEKSIW was found guilty of four counts unlawful possession of wildlife (moose, elk, mule deer and antelope), three counts of hunting closed season (elk and antelope), and two counts of hunting without a licence (mule deer). LEKSIW was fined $15,000 and given a 5 year Judicial Order prohibiting hunting or accompanying anyone hunting.
Carmine MAGLIONE was found guilty of two counts of unlawful trafficking of wildlife (moose and elk), guiding for reward without a licence, and providing guiding services to a non-resident alien without an Outfitter-guide permit. MAGLIONE was given an $11,000 fine, a 15 year Judicial Order in which he is required to report all hunting activity including any wildlife he comes into possession of and 6 year automatic recreational hunting licence suspension.
Donald MATTILA was found guilty of unlawful possession of wildlife and was given a $600 fine.
Trent MORRISON was found guilty of trafficking in wildlife and was given a $2,500 fine and 3 year recreational hunting licence suspension.
Greg MORROW was found guilty of hunting without a licence (antlered mule deer), and was given a $2,000 fine and 1 year recreational hunting licence suspension.
Kimberly RESZEL was found guilty of allowing another to use their licence (general white-tailed deer) and was fined $115 and given a 1 year recreational hunting licence suspension.
Lance Darryl RESZEL was found guilty of hunting without a licence (antlered moose), using another licence (general white-tailed dear) and failing to immediately affix a tag (white-tailed deer). RESZEL was given a $7,500 fine and a 3 year recreational hunting licence suspension.
Trevor THOMAS was found guilty of trafficking in wildlife. THOMAS was given a $2,500 and 3 year recreational hunting licence suspension.
Lengthy and complex investigations such as this often requires collaboration between fish and wildlife officers and multiple other agencies. This investigation involved many Fish and Wildlife officers, Crown prosecutors, members of the RCMP, officers from Kansas Fish and Wildlife and the Saskatchewan Conservation Officer Service, as well as numerous other witnesses. We would like to take this opportunity to everyone who contributed to the successful conclusion of this file.
It is our hope that these significant fines serve as a strong deterrent to any would-be poachers. Anyone with information about any wildlife or fishery violation is encouraged to call the 24-hour Report A Poacher line at 1-800-642-3800, or online at the following link: https://www.alberta.ca/report-poacher.aspx. good to see some some conclusions to investigations. Hopefully the buyers in these trafficking investigations get brought in too.

Crazy.

I have always been curious as to how much these poachers sell the meat for. Seems kinda stupid for a moose steak.

Can we assume that this was the indigenous person that was providing these services under which the other people were taking illegal game ????? if so does anyone believe that he will comply with this 15 year judicial order and report all hunting activity ?? and what good is a 6 year recreational hunting licence suspension ( which he doesn't need anyway if he is indigenous ) am I missing something here, if so someone please clarify for me.

If it is who I believe it is, Maglione is Carmine Jr. His father Carmine Sr. was a Chief Park Ranger in central Alberta in the early 80's. Junior come off as an "entitled" person, who got into trouble with the law on more than one occasion. Father seemed to back him no matter what. Not surprised to see his name come up in one of these court cases - just wondered what took so long.

Given that you only need 1/16 native blood to claim indigenous status it's hard to tell by just looking at the name ?? it's even harder when looking at peoples last names that are Metis and now have the same status as indigenous.

I picked the guy that appeared to have been found guilty of the charges that one would associated with the leader of this mob, maybe he just had indigenous females with harvest cards riding around with him as there appears to be a couple names in there that could be tied to this scenario.

It's hard to say, that's why I was asking if anyone knew more facts.

Exactly, the judicial order is a dead giveaway, plus the charges of guiding.

- Shanon Leskiw and his wife are from the Spedden / Ashmont area. He ran a taxidermy business and is a teacher.
- Don Chornahus is from St. Paul
- Carmine Maglione [SONNY] is from the St. Paul area too, he has a limp and walks with a cane. Had my confrontations with him in the past as a land owner. A true scum bag and figured he walked on water when it came to wildlife and fish. Was very accompanying to help his friends out when they shot there illegal game saying it was his.
- Lance Reszel of St. Paul always hunted lots with Carmine Maglione. Lance shot his big bull moose last year but Carmine couldnt get there in time to claim it. Local farmer called Game Warden and he got busted red handed and long time coming. Always shot a moose every year tag or not and has a nice 54 inch bull moose on his wall he poached. Always showed up with his biggest buck in the Ashmont horn show if he shot 5 that season. Bragged lots about his night vision hunting equipment. Filled his wife Kimberys tag every year.
_Kimberly Reszel - Wife to Lance, I dont think she knows how to put a bullet in a gun. Passenger tag.

So 13 convictions and the St. Paul county comes in at a near %50 show up in the court room. Hum!!! 6/13

It is a real shame that these miscreants seem to get away with this nonsense for decades before they finally get caught. In many cases they never get caught at all.

When criminal acts are done using a metis card the card should be taken away, along with the minimum fine of 25000 and then maybe they will think twice about doing it.No hunting rights for life because your using some thing granting you special rights by a court and you broke that agreement

The laws just have to put into place like driving drunk or texting the fines are steep now and will keep going up.

So if you want to be a wannabe Fn's and you embarrass the area allocated for the card to be used ,out you go and back in white as you were born along with your 1/16th.

If it's not for personal food which is a crock of crap ,unless you live where you need to hunt to survive and if you use it right no problem, but use it for crime go do the time and hit the want adds looking for a days pay.Maybe write to DEAR ABBY for help.

Not saying that metis are lazy or crooked, but there's bad apples in every society ,so take the bad ones out in order to preserve what you got or it can be remove as fast as it came in.

Just because the courts agreed doesn't mean we cann't go to court to disagree if this keeps up for using there rights to commit crime. Sound like a bit of a rant and it dam well is.

Glad FW nailed them and to all those who had threads about the bad FW officers ,so where's the whiners on this one about how FW hurt there sensitive feelings and told them the laws they knew nothing about or were to aggressive on there approach, it's not the holy tabernacle choir ,there officers of the law protecting the future of our wildlife.

JD
