It's a great medium-range calibre for moose and elk. Shot my first moose with one more years ago than I care to admit.

I've only thumped a couple of deer with my 308, but I came to the calibre late in life as they say.
If you drive a 165gr. Partition at an easily obtainable 2650fps(22"bbl)
And set things for 3" high at 100yds.
You end up only 6.75" low at 300yds, and packing 1522ftlbs, of energy.
That's more than enough gun, bullet, enregy, and a small enough drop to knock 'ol Bullwinkle on his @#$% no problemo.

Great round. Close to 30.06 for knockdown power. Far better in a semi-auto, because of the short cartridge. A lot of elk and moose have hit the ground after a shot from a .308. I do not have a .308, but have watched hunting partners put their animals down with one. Personally, I prefer a 7mm Mag. or a .338.

Thats all my uncle used after he gave up on his 30-30. He got his in 1967 and the first moose he shot with it ended up being two moose. Cow and calf. He didn't see the calf behind the cow. Finished his hunting season with one shot. Back then they were allowed 2 moose tags and cows had a 3 day open season starting the first tues. of November. My partner has dropped many moose and deer with his .308

Have used a 308 lever action savage for the last 40 years. Shot at least 30 moose most one shot kills 5 elk 3 deer dont like deer meat. When we had to walk it was important that the rifle be light in weight. I do not know if it shoots a close group as always shoot off hand. Practise with a paper plate between 100 and 200 yards if you can hit it 9 times out of 10 that is good. If 100 yards or more try for a lung shot even at 200 yards the bulet will go through both lungs and be lodged next to the hide on the far side. Now only shoot the smale ones as the meat is better.

My 308 hasn't failed me yet up to 125yards. Can't tell you how my 308 would do beyond that point, I never practise beyond 125yards. If your wondering why I never went beyond 125yards, will during hunting season I never had to.

For my 14th birtday I recived my lever action savage 308. It came with a 4 bullet clip and Dad bought me a second clip. I'm 39 now and still shoot it. I now use federal high energy, 180 grain nosler partitions and I absolutlly love the gun. I have shot moose and deer, usally the bullet goes right through. Every year or so I think of buying a bigger gun and every time I think why, the gun is light, carries more than enough of a punch and there is almost no recoil. My farthest shot was a whitetail buck at 250 to 300 yrds. I had a rest and all three shots, One standing and two running went right through. All my deer and moose died within 100 yrds. In my opinion this is a great all around gun. Now if I could only get a bull elk to stand still long enough to add that species to my list. Hope this helps

Interesting... I've upland hunted for some time but want to get into big game and have been considering caliber. Mainly deer and antelope, but I want the capability to take the occasional elk and moose as well (so basically I want it all LOL) Shot a buddy's 30-06 and 270. Both OK but I thought the 30-06 a BIT harsh recoil wise. I can handle it, but why? Was thinking maybe .280 as perfect, but now you have me thinking .308. Not as flat shooting as the .280 for those long antelope shots, but I'm wondering how much less flat.

Funny a number of people mention the savage. I just found out my dad actually used to hunt when I was little. I never knew that. He had a Savage 99 lever action in .308. Sold it 40 years ago around Edmonton. Perhaps one of you guys are using it!

The Savage 99 is a great rifle, and the .308 will knockdown whatever you want it to in North America.

I have hunted big game for 10 years now and my only rifle has been my Voere .308. It is has taken 2 moose in that time, with no problem. I would suggest a heavy, premium bullet as it saved us about 50 yards of moose packin' this year.

I have shot 5 dear and 1 moose with mine in the last 4 years. I used 180 gr winchester silver tip. The bullet went through every time. The moose was at 100 yards and droped like it was hit by lighting.

enjoy

t you didn't say what you've been shooting.
While the 308 is a widely accepted calibre I must be the dissenting opinion. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with a 308, or trying to rain on anyone's parade, but if you've been shooting/hunting in the 243/270/300mag. family you'll be dissapointed.
Few yrs ago I got a blr 308 in a horsetrade. Being used to hunting with fast flat trajectories the 308 felt like I was lobbing rocks.
If you're moving up from a 30-30 you'll think you're in heaven. It's all relative.
That being said the 308 will do what you want a rifle to do with very good success.
Best of luck.
