Dead Wolf
Went out last thursday for an archery moose, and rifle black bear hunt. We got surprised with a pack of 8 or more wolves. managed to make a nice shot on only one of them unfortunately. They scattered making it difficult to shoot more, but was still very exciting. I see many wolves a year, but never get a chance for a shot so Im pretty pumped to have my first wolf.
Every year I see more and more wolves in this area and a pack that size can really decrease ungulate populations. This is one of the reasons the elk are so quiet around here. IMO, they need to open up a bounty for these critters in the west yellowhead.(maybe there is one I'm not aware of??) Happy hunting and Good luck out there guys.

Sweet job with a bow !!! Congrats.
Heard thewolves are bad near our moose hunting grounds again this year as a friend's wife works in the area and almost sees wolves daily
We leave in like 3 weeks for our trip...better be no wolves .

Nice wolf OP! And good job!
As I understand it, if you take a wolf on public land, you have to preserve the fur, right? I'm interested in helping ungulate populations, and wouldn't mind euro-mounting the skull, but I have no interest in a wolf hide, and can't really afford the expense of having it tanned either. Is it generally easy to find people willing to take them off your hands?

Never said I got it with a bow. We usually switch to bear hunting in the afternoon, so I had my rifle with me. Wish it was a bow kill.

Im not 100 percent sure how that works, maybe there are some trappers on here that can clarify that. I would be interested to know myself. I know mine will be full mounted so no worries there.
I would think a properly skinned wolf hide would be fairly easy to find someone to take it. Again, not sure of the legalities of doing that. You would want to check into that before doing so. I'm sure someone on here has the facts for us.

There is currently no bounty on wolves in Yellowhead County. If the outdoor community were to lobby the provincial MLA in Hinton, and the municipal government, a bounty might be considered.
There is, of course, always the concern about a backlash from PETA et al, so the province and municipality would need to feel they are doing the correct thing and have the backing of the majority of voters.
In ascending order of effectiveness:
1.Phone calls
2. E-mail
3. Letters
4. Presentation before the MLA or municipal Council
Leaving emotion and hyperbole out, and having as many facts and supporting statements and tie in's to other projects, ie. the Caribou issue, as possible lends more weight to the request.
Regards,
Dave

wolf
Guys, as a trapper and rancher here is my take on regulations. We trappers would not waste wolf hide as could be worth up to $500, but usually wait until prime , lots of long fur in November. As a rancher can kill problem wolf and not reclaim hide. I believe as hunter you can shoot wolf and not recover hide , but necessary with black bear. However best to find someone to use the hide. You cannot sell hide ,must have a trapper or fur buyers license.

You could sell the hide to a trapper for probably 1/3 of the going rate.

I wish you didn't have to save the hide, but the regulations are pretty clear.
Quote:
NOTE: It is unlawful, with the following exceptions, to allow the pelt of any furbearing animal to be wasted:
It is not legally necessary to salvage pelts of 1) furbearing animals taken in accordance with regulations authorizing control of problem wildlife, or 2) coyotes harvested, by residents, outside of public lands in the Green Area.
|
I guess that if I take a wolf while I'm out there, I'll have to just stick the fur in the freezer and look for a trapper willing to take it off my hands.
