Interested in helping kids?
Hey, all -
I teach the Outdoor Ed option to grade 8/9 students at my school and would be interested in taking them ice fishing in early March - Chain Lakes by Nanton would be a reasonable prospect. I have one auger, but am wondering if there might be members with augers who might be interested in helping some 13- and 14-year-olds acquire a neat new experience on a Tuesday or Thursday, as it would take me a while to drill 20 holes? Please PM me to express interest and we can discuss.

Depending on the day I can drive down from Red Deer. I did a boys and girls club thing a few years ago at chain and it was fun.
I have a 8” gas auger.

Thanks, guys! Nice to see some interest both on this thread and by PM. One respondent has suggested that Chain might not be our best bet (it has been several years since I've been there). I'll be reconsidering that choice and getting back to you all in the next week or so.

I took the easy way out up here in Edmonton. I hired Ray Kohlruss of Reel Angling, and then spread the cost to the kids on the field trip fees.
He was great; he came early, met my dad, drilled all the holes, provided all the bait and tackle. Made it real easy for me!
My Wildlife students really enjoyed the outing and we caught 20+ perch and 2 brook trout.
Anyways, it was worth the cost of the guide to do all the work me!
Don't know of any guiding outfits that do ice fishing guiding in southern Alberta, if you were considering that option...
...just a thought.

If someone from Edmonton is going down to help I would be happy to tag along and help however I can. I don't have an auger but can offer any other kind of support needed.

Do you need rod/reel combos, ice scoops, rod holders (also might have a tip-up). Some twit broke into my garage last spring and stole my auger head and I've been divesting of all my ice gear ever since. I just have a few small pieces left, but if you could use them for a good cause I'd be willing to box them up and ship them on my dime.

I'd like to publicly acknowledge erik for providing some good gear to help us out, and fisherdan for joining us this coming Tuesday. I'm excited to get these kids out for a new experience, and you guys have helped it to happen!
