Vortex bino’s

Looking at a vortex bino’s but can’t decide what size to go with. I hunt mostly open fields and some bush. Can not decide if I should go 10x42, 10x50 or even 12x50. I do not have the best eyes so 8x are out. Any pro’s or con’s about the 3 options or experiences with these ?

10x42 are great

The second number is the objective size and creates the size of the beam of light that is available for your eye. The objective size glass also has a big weight attached to it. The beam of light size is smaller or bigger depending on your magnification that you choose. In a dim evening, your eye pupil opening will be about 4mm. Anything more than this is essentially wasted. A big exit pupil is easy to get eye into and its got lots of 'forgiveness' for seeing the image and avoiding the black edge. Shaky rides that are bumping you around while viewing love these oversized binoculars. If your standing still while viewing, 10x42 are great.

10x42
42mm diameter ÷ 10 magnification = 4.2mm

10x50
50mm ÷ 10 mag = 5mm eye light

12x50
50mm ÷ 12 = 4.16mm

I have had some Diamonback 8x42 for a few years now. I hunt on the prairies exclusively and they work very well for big game and waterfowl.

10 x 42 all the way. anything over 10x gets a little tough to use effectively without tripods and anything over 42mm objective gets a little heavy on the long treks. personal preference really. I have the 10 x 42 viper HDs and love the crap out of them.

Im assuming hunting open fields and bush you aren't hiking 10 miles with camp on your back so I would go with the 10x50's. They are bigger and heavier but well worth it in the early and fading light as well as in darker bush. The diameter differences might not seem that large but it makes a difference I LOVE more light. Check out birdforum.net those guys take binos seriously some of their comments or opinions might help to sway you one way or another

10x42 are proven for versatility in open country or in the bush. I just bought a pair of 10x50s and I love them also. I would definitely not recommend 12 power binos unless you plan on mostly using them on a tripod as they are hard to steady. The extra power doesn't do you any good if you can keep them still enough to focus on your target.

You will want to research the quality of the optic and power. The higher you go the more noticeable the cons of the bino will show through. If your considering Viper or razor then all options might be viable. Diamondback I would stick to 8 or 10 X 42.

Another vote for the Diamondback 10 x 42.
... and don't forget the tri-pod.
