Default Medicine Hat Hot Water Return

I'm new to Medicine Hat and have been seeing someone fishing in a part of the river where it looks like there is hot water being pumped back into the river. I'm just curious if anyone knows what a guy could expect to catch there. I'm assuming that there's probably decent size Pike in water like that. But would you catch perch, goldeye, burbot or sturgeon there?

I assume you mean coming from the cogen next to the bridge....it's great for walleye in the fall and the odd sturgeon is pulled from there. I fish it occasionally when I'm down there for the CFI shutdown.

I think it's cogen. The water is very shallow so walleye is not what I expected to be the target fish there. I'm going to have to head down and give it a try.

Walleye are not afraid of shallow water if it is where their food resides.

Could have been after bait fish. Ran into a fisherman at one of my river spots one year asking how the area was for minnows. Was complaining about how many people netted the outflow there.

I've seen a guy with a net there. But more often than not it's someone fly-fishing.

Love that shutdown, the camaro crash helmet is alive and well at CF, I’ve fly fished in the fall with no success, didn’t try very hard mind you.

In the fall especially, some of the biggest walleye you will ever catch are caught at night in less than 10 feet of water.

Welcome to the Hat! You could catch any of Pike, Burb, Walleye, Sauger, Goldeye, Mooneye, Sturg, several species of suckers and chubs, and apparently Prussian Carp now too. No perch. All roam the SSR around here. Yes, there are some monster Pike in there. Lost a pig at shore a few years back while sturg fishing. I swear this thing was over 4ft long and FAT! Sadly she tossed the hook as my friend jumped in the water to wrangle it. Gone. I've caught several big girls since but none as big as that one. Doh.
Anyway, yes the hot water comes from the powerhouse. Used to swim down there as a teen many years ago, jumping off the small cliffs into the warm nasty water. Unfortunately we were not the only ones who liked this spot. We stopped going after many cut feet due to coolios smashing bottles in and around the water. I've never had much luck fishing in that area, tbh I think the hot water deters the fish, and it's a bit shallow and fast for my liking.
Shoot me a p.m. closer to open water season when the whole river is clear of ice and I'll send ya in the right direction. Maybe even get out on the water with ya for a day. There's some good spots in and around town, most are no longer secrets haha but there are plenty fish in there for us all to enjoy. Not far from the best sturg spot in town is also the best spot for Pike and nobody fishes them because they are all after the Dinos lol. Missing out they are.
Cheers and Good Luck!
