Great catch

In Ontario (lake simcoe) this is a common way to catch big whitefish but don't see it a lot here in the prairie provinces , very cool video

There are a few lakes in Alberta where the White fish commonly eat minnows and they can be caught on metal jigs, spoons and jigs. Even got them on an anchovie on a quick strike rig.

I’ve never specifically targeted whitefish but have caught several while jigging for lake trout or walleye on a bare 50/50 gold/silver Williams Whitefish or live minnow on a tip up rig.

I beg to differ. Never caught a whitefish on a jig or spoon with minnow in AB in over ten years of fishing AB lakes. That said, I have a hunch you fish many many more lakes then I have haha. Mind u, I have never ever targeted them.
You know what they say Brandon, "pics or it didn't happen". Lol, kidding.

Great vid Ricky, thanx for sharing.

Here is one eating a tube jig. Got a bunch at this lake on spoons and jig but not many on video.

You know me... I record most things in pic and video.
As requested the whites I caught from Pinehurst on an anchovie.

It happens at most lakes and is common. Anyone limiting themselves to just wire worms are missing out on some really fun whitefish fishing.

Gotcha. Might have to give it a shot. Like said never really target them and have had poor luck on the fly with them, using wireworms however. Good to know, thx.

Kastmaster spoons work great for whitefish, just pound bottom and then bring it up out of the dust and jiggle it on the spot.

When I did creel survey for the MNR on Lake Ni****ing years ago before the advent of underwater cameras the few avid whitefish fisherman there were had a very interesting setup. They placed their huts in a location for the duration of the winter in water shallow enough to see bottom. They would save egg shells all year then dump them down the hole(most had one large hole about 2’x3’ in the centre of the shack) in order to make bottom more visible when viewed looking down the hole. They used blackout curtains to darken the hut inside to further increase down hole visibility. Next they would start baiting under their hut by putting bags of semi- dried salted emerald shiners down hole. You could look down and see the dead shiners laying on bottom and watch the fish come in and feed on them. Those fellows generally fished the Lake Simcoe style whitefish tip up with a weighted spreader set tight to bottom with a small shiner on each end. The tip up was balanced such that when the whitefish picked up the shiner the tip up pointed upward and they grabbed it and set the hook. It was quite a finesse tactic that worked well from what I saw. I tried it a few times but there was a real learning curve to it. I always did better just catching them incidenttally while jigging for trout and walleye, lol.
