Default Tomato seeds

I was just wondering if anybody grows tomatoes and keeps seeds from what they grow. If so how many years have you been doing this. I'm going to be on my fourth year for a couple of varieties.

That sound very interesting. We have always gone with Heritage varieties like the black Crim. Never thought about saving the seeds and doing our own. I think you have just got us started on another project!

Yep, the plants that are hardy , produce the most, best flavour. I got a few things I look for when seed saving, hardiness to weather is my main one. And for my long season varities it's the earliest to fruit.

im only on 3rd years

I have been trying to keep from the first ripe fruit also. I have been keeping cherokee purple and black cherry. The cherokee purple flower and fruit before any early varieties that I buy.

I love heritage varieties, the folks would always save the seeds (by fermenting) and with the price of seeds growing, I'll definitely be saving seeds this year. Give me a shout if anyone has a few to spare. Always looking ot try new (or old) varieties. I'm sure the plants would be much stronger with multi-generation stock that has acclimatized.

IIRC Many varieties nowadays are hybrids created by crossing two or more varieties to come up with a new variation. Saving seeds from the hybrid results in producing plants which revert back to one of the varietys used in creating the hybrid.

You need to keep seeds from a heirloom if you want them to be true. I haven't tried fermenting I just let them dry on a paper towel then store in an envelope. I wanted to try lemon boy but wasn't sure if it was a heirloom or not. I really like the yellow or orange tomatoes.

Correct, F1 hybrids will give mongrel offspring. Heritage strains are a different animal. Anyone have a source for Lemon Boy seeds? Very interested.

I noticed Lemon Boy's on the Vesey's website. Grew them 2 years ago with plants we bought at Golden Acres. Nice tomatoes.

Gonna give tomato growing one more try this summer. What are the best tasting tomatoes? Looking forward to some toasted tomatoe sandwiches that actually have some tomato taste.

I've tried beefeaters in the past and they were pretty good.
