Default New discount airline starting up...

...and it completely avoids Alberta.

Quote:
A new airline set to take flight today is offering ultra-low fares between seven Canadian cities for as little as $89 for a one-way flight.

NewLeaf revealed its flight plans at joint events in Kelowna, B.C., Winnipeg and Hamilton that started at 11 a.m. ET on Wednesday.

As of Feb. 12, flights are available from seven Canadian airports:

Abbotsford, B.C.
Halifax
Hamilton, Ont.
Kelowna, B.C.
Regina
Saskatoon
Winnipeg

CEO Jim Young says the company is focusing on second-tier airports in part because "lower landing fees mean we have savings we can pass on to you."

Young said the airline is looking at adding U.S. sun destinations later in 2016.

What an odd selection of cities. Maybe something about the size or cost of using the airports in those mostly smaller towns?

Not in Calgary? Missing a big part of the Western fares....

I believe that's the primary reason.

Cost of using major airports is way out of line. Think Pearson is among the most expensive in the world. "Somebody" has to pay for that continuous expansion, Way above what is needed.

I guess Calgary is one of those expensive airports to land.

It would be perfect for a stop for Red Deer, but the runway is a tad short for those larger jets.

But I do believe they are extending the runways this summer.

I remember meeting a Jim Young from AGT many moons ago. If it's the same man, a very bright individual. If he were an officer in the military, he would have gone far.

Need to start somewhere, and those are good centers to begin from. Too bad the Edmonton City Center airport closed, would have been a prime AB landing strip for that venture.

Look at that map. They'd make more money if they flew straight lines instead.

Actually, it isn't totally uncommon to see Canadian North landing and taking off with their 737's at Red Deer Regional.

Sure would be nice to see another carrier sign on here. Location seems pretty ideal for what this airline wants to accomplish.

Cost might be stopping them right now, greedy buggers.

Even Villeneuve would be a nice option.

Probably, plus starting out they don' wont to bloody themselves if a fist fight with WestJet and Air Canada, particularly if they try to muscle their way into WestJet's headquarters city. WestJet didn't go anywhere near Toronto or Montreal when they were starting out. Leaf have looked at passenger data and likely determined these cities are under-served by WJ and AC, and that Sask people in particular are tired of having to go through Calgary or Edmonton.

It could happen. That is to say, once the runway extension(s)/upgrade(s) are completed at **Red Deer airport the facility might well see a marked increase in total movements of single-aisle 'heavy metal' aircraft like Boeing 737s.

For my wife and me, it would be quicker, easier, and much cheaper for us to drive to Red Deer then fly to Hamilton, ON, rather than driving to Calgary or Edmonton and flying to Pearson International in order to visit our family who live midway between Toronto and Hamilton.

Waiting for (the) NewLeaf to turn (up in YQF).

They'd never make it off the ground if they tried that.

Adding red deer as a location would be a cash cow. People from Calgary and Edmonton would make the trip. New leaf could build the parking spaces and cash in there too

Looks like they are on hold pending an inquiry. All tickets have been refunded.
