Default Filling up 1 pound Propane bottles

I recently purchased a propane adaptor to refill those green 1 pound propane camping bottles.
It is a gravity type system, that works by installing the green bottle onto the 20 pound tank. Turning it over and letting it fill up.
My question is, how full are you able to refill those green bottles. It seems like I can only refill those green bottles at best, maybe 40%
Does anybody have any advice on how to fill these bottles up a little more? I understand that you can never fill them up 100%, but my efforts to fill them up more seem to be futile.
Any advice /tips would be appreciated.

put green bottles in the deep freezer for at least a couple hours. make sure 20lb bottle is at normal room temp. have the 20lb bottle hanging upside down with the fitting in the nozzle. take bottle directly from freezer to the 20lb and get it filling. takes a couple minutes and generally speaking you will have the full 1lb in it. you could always put the 1lb bottle back into the freezer and repeat, you may get an extra ounce or two but my scale usually has me right near a full lb with the first fill.

cool video, definitely works that's for sure. I am not sure why he got so little with the freezer method in his test. a deep freezer is generally a bit colder so that's maybe why I get it to the full weight like he does with the relief valve venting method.

I vote this as the best thread I've read in a while. Thanks for asking the question and thanks for that video.

I don't bleed from the relief valve because they can't always be trusted to reseat, so I just run a burner on it until I have the weight I need.
After doing a few I've got to know the sound of a nearly full bottle as well when it is being filled. I don't bother weighing them as after a bit of practice you can tell how full they are by giving them a shake.

Where did you get the adaptor? I've been looking for one of those. Feed up paying 7 bucks for 90 cents of propane.

I have done the freezer trick. Some filled better than others. Thought it was just the small tanks, so I would chuck those ones. Going to try the relief valve trick now and see what happens.

My brother brought mine up from the US. Might find em at Cabela's here or Princess. Or try Ebay or Amazon. Good luck.

At $15 dollars for a three pack at CT, I wouldn't even waste my time. Mostly because I'm clumsy and I've had a few "episodes" with propane in the past.

I saw them for sale in Wholesale Sports in Calgary the other day - looks identical to the version I got from Cabelas in Kalispel

Ok thanks, I think I can find one with that info. Thanks. I can't imagine how many of these things are in the land fills. That will be one less thing I will be getting ripped off on.

I make it a point of never storing them in the house after, cause that relief valve can leak after you play with it. Gloves are a good idea as well

I built a fill nozzle with parts from Greggs used a 6 " long pipe so that the little bottle stands upright turn the 20 upside down and works very well I froze the mini bottles and than put the 20 lbs in bath tub with warm water hooked it all up and got the full 1 lb in

I got my adapter a few years ago off EBay, about $10.00 and free shipping back then, I have filled lots, just make sure your green bottles are in good shape and keep them really cold before filling or they wont draw the propane in remember you are trying to draw in liquids so if your green bottles are not cold enough the propane will boil off instantly and you will barely get any in your tank, fill by turning your larger bottle upside down so you are filling liquids versus the vapour space. Super inexpensive way to have lots of the little one pound bottles on hand. I had friends save me some of theirs so I have a good supply.
