Default Bear down!!!

I've been after this bear nicknamed Mr. MAJESTIC for 3 years now, shot under him 2 years ago and he outsmarted me last year as I didn't see him in the flesh once, just late night and early morning pics. We moved the bait a few hundred yards this year and set up on the 29th. Checked baits Friday morning at noon and he had just hit it that morning as he was back and forth on the bait from midnight to 5am. Got in the stand that night at 530 and I'm getting texts from my two other buddies about the slow night as our 3 other baits haven't been touched yet. I tell the boys that the squirrels tell me he's circling and 20 mins later I hear the unmistakable "crunch crunch" 100yrds to my left. I just caught a glimpse of him circling upwind, turned the camera on, grabbed my bow and stood. He circled behind the bait and came in behind the crib wall and stood there. Eventually he comes around and stands beside the bait barrel and I have a branch in the way, he sat by the barrel and chewed on a log for about 30 seconds before stepping into the wide open at 17yds, he looked toward my tree and then behind him briefly but it was too late. The arrow flew true and all i saw was a large splatter of blood on the barrel, he ran north down a trail and let out four moans. My buddy climbed out of his spot and elation set in as we found him 40yds away. I had a long journey with this bear and I knew my only shot at him would be in early season. Not bad for the first sit of the year!

That's some good work there. If you don't mind, you should post what you used for bait and how much work you put in over the last few years to get that beauty. I am one of those who didn't used to understand how much work goes into hunting over bait.

Congrats again - what are you planning to do for taxidermy?

We bait with meat scraps from the butcher, beavers, sweet oats or popcorn. The amount of work put in for this bear is insane. My buddy and I have trapped 23 beavers in April, that's just the start of the work, my wife just said "So your done now?" as if the other 2 hunters can manage on their own for the next 3 weeks!

I want to get a rug done, but I can't break the bank doing it so we'll see.

Thats a beautiful big boar. You should make a rug even if it breaks the bank. I killed a 21 inch bear in BC ( first bear) and didnt rug it and it still upsets me today. That must be a 7 ft plus bear! Congrates and thanks for sharing.
