Default Crossing the border with Coyote Fur

Hey Boys

I'm heading to NYC in a few weeks and I wanted to bring a pair of Coyote Fur Mittens as a gift for my buddy there. I'm gonna carry-on cuz I'm only there for 4 days. Any chance I'll get hassled at the border or get the mitts confiscated? I recently read an article about a CDN woman who had her sealskin purse confiscated and she was fined $250.

Any thoughts or experience with this?

Do I have to claim them on my customs form?

My clients travel back to the U.S. with fresh coyote hides with no problem. Some states, at least Ca. don't allow wolf imports and the ones that do require a CITES permit, but you should be good with coyote fur products.

You should check first. Lady from back home just had a seal skin purse worth a few hundred bucks confiscated/stolen by US border officials. Apparently the US thinks harp seals numbering 6 million head are endangered!

Thanks Redfrog....thats what I wanted to hear.

Any more stories of flying with fur from anyone?

I've been reading online about the Dog & Cat Fur Protection Act that states that any fur from a dog or cat is forbidden to enter the states.....it was to forbid those Chinese knock-offs claiming to be mink/rabbit but were actually dogs or cats....the problem is that is doesn't specifically clarify that only domestic dog/cat furs are forbidden not all canines/felines....just hoping I don't come across some ignorant customs agent who thinks this is considered a 'dog'

Put Polar bear fur on the list also.

Fly tyers were the first to be stopped by those nice people at U.S. customs.

I think you are best off just calling ahead and making sure it's okay .
