Default Hot weather elk

Just wondering on some tips for elk in the hot weather. The morns are cool but heat up quick and there is no calling in the last 3 days. Very little sign where usually there is plenty. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Too much water around to do that but just wondering of any unconventional ideas? Most years it hasn't been at least a problem finding them but still hard to anchor one.

Locate during the early hours of the morning - 2-3am. They will typically talk to you at this time of night if you coax them. Return at first light - they wont be far.

X2

Ive located a number of bulls by bugling in the wee hours of the morning.
Get them talking, them come back at first light on high alert.
Move quietly glass often and try not to call until you think you're real close.

That sounds like some good advice. I'll have to give it a try. Thanks!

Default Elk

Ive seen the same Bull ( 5x5) for 3 weeks -- on the way in in the dark --He trots off for a bit --I wait till sun up -- do a couple of calls -- Saw him again in same spot ( no permission yet ) and cant get him intrested
Calls are good -wind is great camo is right --but he isnt calling yet -- Gotta close the gap for a bow shot-- I know at this point I will take a cow if a shot permits but would like to take the bull

Still to hot me thinks

Happy Hunting

Cheers

Ian

Default Yea... not talking much

I got in on a herd last night with one bull.

Couln't get any closer due to the covefor and it being soooo dang crunchy loud (we need some rain).

One response.... would not engage.

Mind you, the wind was scetchy at best.

I'll try stalking them from the bottom of the valley tonight if I can determine that they are still there.

I have had elk bugling since monday.

The elk have been super quite during the day and early evening. They start calling back about an hour before sunset but haven't been coming out.

They guy who reccomended calling after dark to locate them and coming back at least 1 hour before sunrise has got it perfect!

Once you know where they are, come in super quite, set up in good cover on a high point if possible and make sure you have the wind right! Listen until shotting light, if you don't hear anything throw our a few low cow mews! Doing this the last two morning I have had elk calling all around me in the first hour after sunrise. It has been awesome!
