Default Right or Wrong?

Ok, so my daughter cannot find work in her chosen trade right now, so she got a job at a popular restaurant as a waitress to help make ends meet. As a new employee she is in "training", even though she has experiance as a server. A couple nights ago she was in training when the restaurant got busier then expected. Instead of simply shadowing her "trainer" she was given a section of her own and performed all the duties required to serve her tables. She was using her trainers sign in code on the till. Everything went smooth.
At the end of the night Mngt. told her that as she was still in training all the tips she made from her customers would be forfeited to her trainer. This rankles, but to make things worse her trainer did not even give her a small share of the tips my daughter made for her.
Am I wrong in thinking this is BS?

P.S. I know that the trainer is responsible to pay tax on tips recieved, just like my daughter would have to, but I am talking about fair/correct play/procedures in the workplace, not tax code regs.

I believe she should have received the tips.

She did the work.

So if it was a poll, vote wrong.

Yeah that... seems shady. She should at least get a fair portion of the tips.

If that's how they operate, that's how they operate.
When she trains someone, she'll get their tips, and it will all come out in the wash.

Old thread but still very relevant.
The restaurant industry is probably the worst industry for mental, physical, financial and sexual abuse. Why? That's how they operate.

Everyone should keep this in mind if they are ever served by a trainee. Tip in cash and straight into that individual's hands.

It was this exact reason and a couple more that my wife quit working for Boston Pizza.

As a customer I tip the person that serves me and if I knew it was going to someone else or at least not being shared I wouldn't tip. I know other people who are in this line of work and tipping seems to be the subject of issues in the work place.
Just regarding tips I am above generous when i tip but it makes me mad when I'm asked to tip paying for my meal at a place like DQ. If I'm sitting down and people are bringing my rye and coke, meals etc I have no issues with tipping. If I have my drink in hand within 5 minutes of sitting down, I tip large.

It's wrong. On so many levels. More levels than I care to get into right now. But suffice it to say, I have quit eating at restaurants, and I would encourage everyone else to do so. They always over cook the turnips and brussel sprouts!! ALWAYS!!!! And that's not all...if you know what I mean...and I'm sure that you do.

That has never happened. You would be reading about it in the newspapers if it did, I can assure you of that...as I would most assuredly and without delay, be writing a letter to the editor of said occurrence!!! Enough said about burnt bacon!!

Trainer takes all the risk-does not make more money to be responsible for the Newb, but is compensated in a way that costs the restaurant owner nothing.
Trainer responsible when her cash does not balance after Newb makes error.

Tis what it is. I do not condone it, but have witnessed same and worse over last 25 years in kitchens and restaurants.

Your daughter likely making exactly what the kitchen made.

Am I correct in thinking you are angry at the only employer willing to give her a job in tough economic times?
She should quit if she truly feels mistreated.

Default Tips

My kid went through the same thing. Must be common... At any rate in two months roles were indeed reversed.

Soooo very wrong.

At the very least the "trainer" should be tipping her out of her tips. Same as a percentage goes to the kitchen and bartender.

Giving her a section of her own and taking the tips that she earned is stealing IMO.

Agreed, dirty practice, morals and ethics are no longer what they were.

Your post kind of makes sense, except for the beginning, middle, and end. ...Trainer is overwhelmed and glad for the help. ...Owner happy that guests were served properly and might return....Daughter won't quit cause she's not a quitter.
I'm just glad that your a dishwasher and not a restaraunt owner.

EDIT... This post was in responce to OMEGA50 post

I think it is 2 separate issues. From what I can gather it is industry standard for the the trainer to receive the tips. Right or wrong, it is what it is and she should accept that part of it. What I cannot condone is the trainer keeping all the tips. She didn't do any of the work yet feels entitled to be paid for it? I couldn't stand working with her ever again.

I think the outcome depends on the individual who is training.

I have worked in the service industry and have been fortunate to work with good people.

Unfortunately you can not control the environment you enter.

The hardest part is remaining true to what you believe.

Total BS! The customer tips their server, not their server's trainer.

I have worked in all areas of bars and restaurants before and nowhere that I worked did this and no decent person wouldn't at least split the tips with the trainee.

Total BS. Should have at the very least been able to keep 1/2 the tips if not all even as a trainee.
