That was north Island. It's way rougher there

The weather between the two on the outside is very similar
that's only 75 NM away.

The guide sure is lucky!

How common is 30-40 knot wind out there? Seems like a stupid choice to be out on the ocean if it was that windy out.

I am planning a kayak trip out that way, won't be able to do it if it is windy like that though.

You have no clue then. There's a huge difference between Esperanza and Tofino for water conditions. I've been fishing the west coast of Van Island for 30 years and know this to be true

Yeah, I have to agree. i looked on a map and these 2 places are a world apart.

Sooke is another great example. You get out of that straight and away from it and it is a world difference from being in it. Which in it, it is bad most afternoons. At least for my little 16 footer.

No fish is worth being out in 30-40 knot wind. Even an offshore that has no swell with it would be a waste of time to try fishing in.

Shaun, how strong does the wind have to get before you stay in?

For anyone like you or I, I agree. But this is was a full time guide. That is their livelihood for the summer and they have the experience and usually the boats to take it on. Freak accidents like this can still happen though. For me I know I appreciate the guides more that talk to their guests about rough weather and decide to go as a group of find calmer waters.

Depends on who i have with me. I can fish in 20-25 knot winds if they can handle it, they usually can't

Exactly.
Back in the early eighties we took chances or were not in the know as quick as we are now to the exact or as close as we can get to winds/weather so there is no excuse to not know your area you plan to fish at and the weather coming in.
Be safe out there.
Tight lines!

The winds are up a bit but we are still able to find the fish as they are moving in a bit.
