Report: U.S. wind energy sector booming - jobs up 20% in 2 years in Texas
Employment in Texas is up 20% in the renewable energy sector in the last two years alone.
There are a LOT of trades and professional people in Alberta whose skills are directly or with very little training who could adapt to the renewable sector, especially as it gets built out.

And here is a report connected to this on how the electrical grid may well be affected:

Ya a micro-grid in AB when it is -30, wind is obviously not blowing at this point and the sun is gone for the day.
For god sakes man think about it, I am not saying we cant do things better than we are but get your head out of the Fricken clouds and deal in reality. As for jobs in this industry they are minimal and low paying as the profit margin for said renewables is low and relies on Government subsides
In some climates this might be doable if you don't mind having your lights go off on a regular basis. I think most Albertans are used to a level of reliability when it comes to Electricity.
If this is such a good idea create your own micro-grid let us know how it works out for you.

Maybe if you are close to a lake you can set up your wave generator, I suspect you might generate more electricity from a stationary bike though.
All great ideas, maybe I could generate some electricity from typing, eating, talking the list of renewables grows and grows.

Do you really think the trades are any lower in renewables versus elsewhere? Any company on the Alberta landscape needs to compete for staff, and need to pay competitive wages. Will it be boomtime Ft. Mac wages? No, but it will be steady and you will be at home at night. And there is a lot to say about steady, as many will attest to.

Meh as far as renewables in AB on the wind side of things %90 of the guys doing maintenance are laborers and I suspect any solar panel installs are the same (companies are not going to pay Journeyman wages to screw panels on a roof). Fact is renewables at this time are not efficient and cost a lot of money with little rewards. I am all for great ideas but this pie in the sky feel good stuff will just get us into more debt. Might as well spend the money adding lanes to the two QE2 at least we will have something to show for the money spent.

Nice. Short term subsidized jobs being created so taxpayers can subsidize higher power costs and destroy non-subsidized jobs.
Even Bernie Sanders has run out of other people's money, give it a rest already.

20% increase in renewable energy jobs!!
Sounds great if you don't understand math. Funny that the article neglected to mention exactly how many jobs that was. I'm guessing maybe 2 jobs.

The employees of the so called green industries are called "simple servants", as a result of all of the taxpayer subsidies that will be required support these industries and accorded gov't pay rates and pensions!!!!!!! They will provide our premier with a new crop of voters at our expense. Sure beats the hell out of campaigning for support.

A friend of mine was running a crane setting up several of the wind turbines in Pincher Creek. He was most definitely not home every night.

Ontario is enough of an example that everyone should be running in the opposite direction
