Default Big Lake Trout In Spray Lakes Resivior

I`ve only caught 15-18 inch lake trout in Spray Laskes Resivior. Has Anyone got anything bigger?

What other fish species are in Spray Lakes?

Default trout etc

There are bigger ones in there, but they are few and far between. The vast majority are in the 1 lb range. I think a few 10 pounders come out each year (rumor has it a 28 lb a couple of years ago). I've marked what look like some pretty impressive fish in the depths of the lake in summer, but never hooked up.

Lots of whitefish in there as well. I don't know that people target much else.

I'll be out there this Sunday. Any tips from the pros? And the biggest I've ever pulled out of spray is 4 lbs.

I hear white tube jigs, jigged a couple feet off the bottom work well.

Would like to hear how you do on Sunday! Best of luck to you!

If u go out to spray try looking for the whitefish in the shallows. Just cast a bobber and wireworm with maggots on and u sould hook into a few.

Default back from spray...

Well what a day I picked to go, I've never seen the water level so low up there. 20"-25" below normal. At spray for the first time in my new boat i had planned on hitting the farthest end from the launch in the morning then working my way back. I was wrong. Only the first 3 KM's were broken up. Ice blocking my dreams. eleven thirty comes and we decide to troll the ice line. I come around the corner and it's all gone-everything but the banks have thawed. Quite the expirience for me. I jigged, cast and wire-wormed but trolling a silver spoon (croc) with an orange flasher provided me with lakers and a single bow. trolled 20' behind 3ounce slip weight 30 feet down. Weather turned sour with rain and swells 18" Went back to my warm truck and came home. Stay deep unless your after WF and there is a better bank slope on the campground side
good luck

Good report, tx. Two and a half is pretty good for Spray. That should put them over 20".

No dock and rocky shores. It's a shallow moor so run and jump or "git yer feet wet".

Reelhooker - did you use a down rigger. How do you get the spoon and flasher down to 30feet?

Any help would be much appreciated, I`ll be out there this weekend.

He used 3 oz slip weight...20 ft before flasher. Slip weight has wire loop that attaches to line works best with monofilament line.

Has anyone ever used the smelt from Superstore in the 2lb bag on a tube jig? I used them in the winter to tip a spinner or spoon, and they were frozen and worked well. Just wondering if they turn to mush when they thaw.

Where is the best place to pick up some smelt?

Hey, do you guys use the whole smelt? I've just a piece of one on the jig and done OK. Maybe I'm doing it wrong?

I use roughly 1 inch pieces. Never tried whole smelt for lakers.

Default smelts at spray

I often use whole smelt when icefishing at spray (3-4"). But with a jig in summer I usually resort to a Gulp minnow. I just find the smelts get so mushy that it's hard to keep them on.
Yeah, the reservoir is drawn down afwully low in the spring. You've really got to watch your lower unit, as there are a few places that get real close to the surface. Like Crawling Valley. Deadly places for boats.
I've heard that fishing from shore is great in the spring just at ice out. Cast out spoons or smelt under a bobber. Never tried myself.
