Hopefully your friend is very boyant. That lake can get rough. I like trolling Rapalas on the breaks.

My son has caught some decent Pike from shore at this time of the year. he gets a bit upset at me when he has to fish from the shore while i'm doing the tournaments.

I use jigs with minnows or leeches in SL. I favor the minows though.

I was there 2 weeks ago for the first time and brought all sorts of bait with me. I started out trolling a crankbait and had my first fish within 5 minutes, never switched lures for 2 days. No electronics so I just picked an area the same distance from shore as all the other boats, I'm pretty sure they were lined up along an underwater ledge.

I was using a Cotton Cordell Big O in perch color, it's one of my favorite lures and works for walleye, pike, largemouth/smallmouth and rock bass, even a couple Ontario perch. If the fish are within casting distance something will go for it.

Default Slave lake

Just got back , after spending a month camping and fishing. The fishing was great even with the extra few feet of water in the lake. Watch the weather if you venture out on the lake, it can get nasty in a hurry.
2 - 3 oz bottom bouncer with anything chartreuse spinner tipped with leach or minnow and you will be in business.
Good luck

Lesser Slave Lake : use a jig and minnow just off the bottom.
Great Slave lake has Lake trout : use a big Thompson spoon.

I've seen plenty of people fishing the river between the boat launch and the lake. And fish being caught. Never tried it myself as I was only there once for the Angler's Cup.

Best shore fishing is probably at the weir, which is just downstream of the bridge you cross on highway 88

Unfortunately there is no launch at martin river, and one is badly needed there imo.

They do have what is called a hand launch, where they expect you to walk your trailer down to the water (100 yrds). More suited for canoe's, and maybe zodiacs. Definetly wouldn't get a 24fter in there.

Only real options is driving back the slave 30 k, launching and on a good weather day driving the boat back to martin beach...and its a gamble if you want to leave your boat in over night or head back in the evening to load...personally I would never leave it in overnight

Can't fish within a certain distance of any weir/dam.

Yet people still do it there all the time. Every time I go up to Slave people always there, right up in the weir.

Oh ya...it is populated...can't see it being too big of an issue as I've always seen F & W there checking guys and leaving, so I don't think it is being enforced...

Thanks Shmag where abouts in slave is the boat launch? Is that one on that little river by camp ground just north of slave accessible for a small fee to anyone?

That's the public launch. It's okay but for $5.00 you can use the one at Canyon Creek, much better for larger boats. With the lake as high as it is, there may be issues getting under the bridge to get to the lake from the public launch.

Yep, heading north over the bridge, take your first right and go 1-200 yrds and take another right. Its free and open to all public. Actually a really good launch but remember most of the river is a no wake zone so you have to trickle out...

This year is higher water so most of it is ok, but normally closer to the lake mouth keep to the left as you're entering the lake. Do not cheat it to the right as you could be on a sand bar on lower years. As you enter the lake just 45 it out to the left for a couple hundred yrds then you can go pretty much any where.

If you are any where near martin river, head up to the martin mountain view point. On highway 88 its about 2-3 km before the campground turn off on the right side. They have a fire tower up there, on a clear day its a pretty good view.

Its also the starting point to a 3 km hike down to lily lake that's stocked with trout...if that's your "Thing"..lol

Also if any golfers, slave has a pretty good 18 hole coarse 10 k north of town
