Default 2008 Archery Caribou hunt

Well, we just got back from our caribou hunt and it was unreal!!! Our whole group harvested nice animals and I was lucky enough to take two bulls on the fourth day with my bow. It was great to finally connect on a P/Y bull but it was unreal to get two in one day.

Here are some photos......
My ever first Caribou and with the bow

This was my second caribou

Congrats! "Unreal to get two in one day"........Wow that's an understatement. It would be a great accomplishment to get one of those big bulls with a bow. Two is outta this world....too bad there wasn't a lottery outlet open up there (I'm thinking that that was your lucky day). Must have been a fair amount of skill involved too. How long of shots? Did you sit on a trail? Spot and stalk? Anyway congrats!

Default Hunt details

Thanks for the comments....it was a great experince. Finally got some sleep from the long drive home so I can fill in some more details.
We were hunting out of Peterson't Point Lake and I have nothing but good things to say about them. We saw tons of good bulls each day. I was the last guy to get a caribou in our group and in fact everyone else had tagged out that was hunting with a rifle at the end of day 3. But because we were seeing so many bulls I was not too worried.
I did both spot and stalk and spot and try and ambush...There is little cover although both bulls seemed to have died in some birch/alders.
Both shots were around 30-35 yards. I was under 40 yards to at least half a dozen bulls and even over shot a really big bull on day 2.
As for the stories...
The first bull we spotted from the water and once we docked we got the spotting scope on him and I could see the huge fronts. I began the stalk with my guide, packer and buddy (the best thing about being last to get a caribou was all the help you get at the end!!!!) watching from the shore. It was about 500 yard stalk only to have him bust me at 70 yards because of the heavy birch along the a creek. I watched the bull run about 600 yards away but then turn around and come back.....I had kept watching him and never showed myself so as he got closer I thought I might have another change...He got to about 80 yards and started to feed again working along a ridge. So I crawled from my spot and ran about 200 yards to get infront of him. I got to the end of the ridge and started to crawl looking for the bull. Then I see the antlers coming straight for me......It seemed like forever but he finally made it to me at about 33 yards and I let a arrow go...it hit a little low and back but was a good shot. It stopped at 53 yards and a I put another arrow into his shoulder and I knew I had my first caribou. He ran about 100 yards into some birch and died about 100 yards from shore. My group was able to watch it all and even film the kill so I can't wait to watch the footage.
The second bull was taken at a natural funnel that I had hunted the first day. When we got to the funnel we saw a few good bulls and we decided to get to the end of the funnel. The bull I took I had at 85 yards several times after several stalks. I was starting to want to give up on the bull. He had joined up with another great bull but they bedded in the open and I thought the stalk was over. But like all caribou the bull changed his mind and got up in a few minutes and started to head to a ridge. My guide told me to go let the air out of him and so I scaled down a large rock face and ran to the end of the ridge. Again just in time to see antlers coming at me..I had decided to take which ever of the two bulls that came first and the guy that I wanted was first. I arrow him at 35 yards and it hit him right in the heart. He went maybe 40 yards and stood. I gave him another arrow for good measure and the caribou hunt was over.
It was the best day that I ever had bow hunting. Our whole camp was great and it was a great experince to return to camp with two archery bulls. Lots of high fives and hand shakes and I was told my the owner that it was a Point Lake first for two archery bulls by the same hunter in one day...so that was kind of cool.

Atta boy, Shed! Man, you have been kicking some serious azz with that bow. I recall a couple of beauty deer from last season along with a P&Y (?) Cougar this winter. Awesome.

The caribou is very near the top of my list along with the red stag.............once I win the lottery.

What's next?
