Default I hope they bring the bounty back....

Well, I never hunted yotes before but according to the neighbours in Sask, I better start. I guess the area i'm in is overpopulated with them and the neighbour across the way can't even let his sheep out during the day, says the yotes haul em down in broad daylight. Whow, they do have a problem.

I usually won't shoot something if I'm not going to use it in someway but if I want to raise GS dogs over there, I better start shooting some coyotes at every opportunity. The buggars are going after dogs too.

Now, you mess with my pooch and your messin with me. Ok, I'm no yote hunter but I do own a 30.30 marlin, do I need a scope on it? I have a 22cal too but thinkin thats not enough.

I really don't want to go out and buy another rifle.....

If they bring back the bounty you will pay for new scope and rifle from proceeds. Back when yotes were $100. US a pelt I bought a new rifle and scope every year for three years from fur checks. You know you want a varmint rifle!!

Big difference now though, only $20, if they bring it back.

You just turn in the paws for $20...you still get to keep and sell the hide.

After the gov's fee, it was like 17 bucks. I can't understand why a bounty...surely will cut down on the number of fawn killers, which will increase deer population and concentration which could increase the likelihood of disease (CWD) and inbreeding.

But hey, if they're gonna pay me to kill yotes, I'm good with that.

Yes it certainly was nice getting $100 each in those days but also think about the competition for there were a lot of us out there hunting them hard and only so many coyotes and land to go around.

I remember getting a certificate from North American Fur Auction in Winnipeg that my large "pales" at $115. each were the highest batch in that auction. A lot of that value is attributed to how they are looked after for if you don't place your shot and don't skin, flesh and stretch properly they wil aways be $30. pelts due to damage and poor care. cutting paws for $20. would have been a bonus.
Nick0danger they are not difficult at all to skin, I will get Sean to show you how if he comes out to see you. The fleshing beam makes the rest fairly straight forward as well. Sawdust to keep fur clean and borax to cure skin and it is off to Winnipeg or North Bay.

With the amount of Anti's against People wearing Fur nowadays I dont think the demand is there to support the big $$ I saw a piece on the news a few days ago about they are using smaller piece's of Fur on Coats as decoration and how the small items like gloves and moccasins are the sellers.

Now speaking Bounty,Was there not a Bounty on Wolves in the Sundre area a few years back? Gov & F&G clubs.

It's been a long time since the price of fur was driven by the North American demand. Overseas markets have been the biggest influence, countries like China and Greece....
But it does seem, in certain circles anyway, that fur is trying to mount a comeback.

For my two bits worth it would be worth it for you to get something that shoots a little flatter than the 30 30. Folks argue about calibers every time there there's more than one caliber mentioned. But if you get something along the line of a good 22-250 or 243 you'll be able to shoot coyotes a little farther away than with your 30-30. If you get a pretty good rifle, and mount a pretty good scope on it, you'll really do some damage.

I agree, even look @ a .204 or a .220 swift all four of these calibers are great flat shooters. I have shot them all and they all have their advantages.

Yote problem here too. Probably someones purse dog got nabbed by one as the township raised the bounty last year from $50 to $100 skinned out but think there is some paperwork involved as well to collect it. Kill them all!!

Once the yotes are gone, it'll be the dog, your neighbor wants to shoot. As I recall, you are a firm believer, that your dog has a right to run freely, wherever he wants. Merry Christmas.

my uncle hit a atermelon first shot ata bout 200 yards w/ his 30-30 marlin so you should be able to hit yotes around that range, they will probly come in closer too.. lol

"I really don't want to go out and buy another rifle....."

What are you a granola crunching tree huggin' hippie????

That 30.30 will kill them graveyard dead for sure and the truth be known will likely be all the gun you need. The ones that are out of range of the Marlin likely won't be a nuisance.

I have lots of coyotes around my place, but I seldom see one inside the 300 yds kill zone. maybe one a year.
Last summer my wife phoned me to rell me one had climbed the apple tree and was stealing apples.

I checked the cough medicine when I got home and the level was still up so I had to believe her.

Default vegetarian coyotes Redfrog

Neighbor asked what would be digging up her carrots last August and eating them, told her probably jackrabbits. She called back a week or so later to tell me it was coyotes. Seems her and hubby were watching just at last light and coyote pair came in dug up carrot row and carried them away. Since these are obviously tree hugging granola eating vegetarian coyotes I am sure they have been imported from BC to give Peta some credibility when we complain about livestock losses. they will tell us that coyotes are kind animals who feed on apples and carrots.
I need more cough syrup!

TUC I was out today shot 3 2 days ago shoot 6 . I think there is a bounty in wheatland $50 but I am keeping mine and getting the huts to skin wash and strech them. Going to be a good year for fur sales think you might get $100 for a good fur this year at the sale

Gheez Louise, is it a poor memory you possess or a dislike for dogs? Sorry, I don't recall saying my dog has a right to run free wherever he wants so I guess its the latter. I think your trying to stir it up, your comment has nothing to do with this topic. Take a hike!

DH, sounds like you had a good couple of days, maybe I'll have to bring you over to do a little coyote control for us.

Red, I was considering some of the comments on here about caliber size but think I'll stick with the 30.30 and put a scope on it. Thanx for the feedback!

My "coyote rifle" right now is a Savage M24 .222/20 ga. I hope to get out and shoot a few coyotes with it and then maybe up grade to a .223 bolt gun.

Calling in and shooting coyotes is a very exciting hunt. There are some fox around here too and I think their pelts may bring a better dollar???

Actually, if you keep your dog close and under control, You wouldn't need to get your shorts in a knot, about coyotes. Take a hike, but keep the dog on a leash.
