New knife suggestions

Im looking at getting a new skinning/field dressing knife currently. I’m looking at either the “benchmade hidden canyon hunter” or the benchmade “saddle mountain skinner”. Anyone own both or either one? Which would you recommend and why? The only gripe I have with the saddle mountain skinner is it seems slightly large. I’m also open to suggestions on other quality knives.

Yeah those are two with very different purposes. The SMS is a more of a meat processing knife, but rather large and heavier to carry. The HCH is about right for a general hunting knife, the choil and thumb groves will work well. Good choice with the S30V, once you use it, and use it, and use it without needing to sharpen, it’s hard to go back to anything else.

To be honest, I’ve moved away from carrying fixed blades due to weight.

Outdoor edge flippin blaze and the good old leatherman charge are what I carry now. Of course I have a pretty big selection at home that gets used for processing.

Spend another $100 and get a custom. If you choose the right builder it’ll outperform any factory blade on the market.

In garage I use those yellow handle boning knives you get from processing supply shops, Henkel?

In the field I’m pretty addicted to the havalon. Pretty fond of cutco serrated for near the truck. Otherwise I did the sv30 thing and 154cm but they are a bugger to sharpen, gimme those henkels and a steel any day please. Or just about anything standard stainless and a steel.

I have the saddle mountain skinner and yes it is a large blade. Bought it for its purpose and don’t think I’ll regret it. Two things I will say are, if you use stones to sharpen and don’t like a thin handle look else where. The slight reflex curve of the blade make it very hard to sharpen on water stones and it’s a very thin handle compared to the blade.Good choice on the steel.

Hidden canyon hunter by benchmade is my choice this year Really like the look and feel of it .
With that said to each their own good luck finding a new knife.

I truly like my Grohmann knives and they are 100% Canadian made.

I’ve seen the light. Didn’t take much hearing from coiloil37 about the finer things about knives until I bought into it as well.
If I were looking for a knife, I’d message him, chuck, and elkhunter11 for some suggestions. There are some other obvious people around here to help out but these guys come to mind

I prefer to sharpen my own knife something about sharpening it after a harvest sitting there replaying the day over makes more of a memory then taking the easy way

Really like gknives out of Newfoundland, great for skinning and gutting, also super sharp and hold a edge well.

I have a Dozier (K2?) For a belt knife and carry a havalon as well.

Honestly, a 3-3 1/2" drop point style and a havalon does anything required ever in the field.

I use Victorinox boning and butcher knives for the clean up at home though.

To save a little $$$$:

Actually if you use one of these; in 3-4 passes and your dull blade is as new, popping sharp.
I have sharpened up to 5 times before I replaced/ tossed it.....

I own the saddle mountain skinner and think it’s an awesome knife for around camp and some heavier cutting or butchering but is a little large to carry around as a belt knife or foot gutting. Personally I prefer the mini crooked river for dressing game. It’s also a Benchmade light compact with a nice profile and a clip point,which I also like. S30v steel. Good looking and a good tool imho.

I like my Knives of alaska. I have the Elk Hunter. The D2 steel sure stays sharp. The knife fits in the hand perfectly

I have owned a pile of knives. And now i only have customs. I like them so much better. Also you are supporting a individual instead of a big company

I havent got to customs yet, but most of my work is down with a Buck omni hunter and a pair of cheap paring knives from walmart for the dirty work (Scent glands ect) Though Cold Steel has an Outdoorsman knife with a joint splitting edge on the back thats intriguing me this year.

Agreed. I have the same knife and sharpen annually wih my lansky set. I will often just touch it up half way through an elk or moose with a hand held swipe through sharpener and then keep going until done.

Not sure about those knives but I really like my Bokor + Dozier Pro Skinner. Holds a great edge for a long time. Sharpen once and clean and quarter up a moose. Repeat. Mike Jones Knife and Tool out of BC makes some nice looking customs too but alas I need other gear more.

In the last five years or so the quality of steel has risen so much that to the layman feel, it is near impossible to tell the difference.

I will say this though, trying to sharpen the real hard steel can be a challenge.....For me a hard steel reacts better to a strop; just don't wait for a long time between sharpening.
