Who's your four legged fishing buddy?

Hey everyone.

I'm in the search for a new fishing companion. Must walk on four legs, have more bark than bite, low prey drive and be good with kids. You got it, I'm looking to buy a dog this fall when I get home from Europe.

A few breed we have in mind is the Bernese Mountain Dog or newfoundlander perhaps.

We have a Norwegian Elkhound. She's great with kids and other dogs, very hardy in the winter and her size (40lbs) is nice and manageable. She's also a really good non-aggressive guard dog. That being said she's high energy and needs lots of exercise...

You mention prey drive. That would be the only downside to an Elkhound...

We picked our pup from here, they get all sorts of puppies of all breeds we got a mixed breed and she's been a great pup, also my fishing buddy as well..

I love my pitty, super friendly, lots of bark, but has a high prey drive... He is fearless. I've had him chase beavers, deer... I've really had to start being more cautious. I fear the day I run into a bear could be his last...

We have a female Newfie (as well as two small mix breeds)... She is absolutely the BEST dog we have ever known!!! She was a rescue as well that was 2.5 years old when we got her (almost 6 now). Never has she had a single aggressive issue, prey issue, food protection issue or anything. She has the gentlest temperment you could imagine. Friends come over with little kids who will pull her ears, poke her eyes, use her like a step stool and even attempt to ride her and she has never once gotten annoyed or reacted defenssively in any way. She just sits there and takes it and does nothing more than slobber on them...

I highly recommend a Newfie to anyone who truly wants a companion dog that is loyal, loving and kind natured. Just do NOT get a Newf if you can't handle some slobber and the hair that comes twice a year when they blow their coats. You also need to be the kind of person who likes a dog to be around them all the time because these dogs always want to be with their masters, even if it is just laying beside you. They are very sensitive and do not do well with scolding etc, but the repsond amazingly to positive reinforcement...

After rescuing mine I will never be without a Newf for the rest of my life. I might suggest you go tye rescue route as well if at all possible. There are a lot out there as people buy them liking how they look but then realize that they didn't consider their needs and how they would fit into their lives. Such a shame really as the are fabulous animals!

I have my pup blue heeler come out with me every chance I get. It's definitely a battle trying to keep him from eating bait, rocks and goose crap while casting out a line.
Im not sure who has a shorter attention span while fishing, him or the girlfriend.

I have two dogs Alaskan Malamute and Siberian Husky. Do not pick these breeds - very high prey drive

Malamute does not get to come up with me any more after the last fishing incident - i am lucky i got the hook out

Some great shots. I like the newf rescue idea. My neighbor is a huge animal rights/ rescue/ yadda yadda dog trainer etc. She will point me in the right direction to find a good one I think!

My bull breed mutt comes fishing all the time. Does well on the boat. No longer cares much about fish unless they are huge, I assume she is taking after me. She does get pretty excited when I'm using bobbers or pitching big lures so I have to watch the lure on the back swing.

My brother's rez mutt has come along a few times too and does really well on the boat. She doesn't have much drive to do anything, lol. Though she did play tug of war with the dock line on my boat for about 2 minutes last time out. Not the smartest dog.

Here is my fishing buddy.
Very high prey drive, bites everything that moves.
Cant go wrong with a shelter dog. Pretty easy to determine prey drive right off the bat.

My old fishing buddy.... he was pretty awesome... very calm and great in a boat.... ( never had him in a canoe ) I'm sure we would have been in the drink.. as he was pretty big.....

we lost our big pity from cancer and would love to get another our kids miss him so much

Well let me see, the GF son's Nova Scotia duck retriever was not a good boat dog. I would cast and there goes the dog right over the side. Our Shetland and Black Lab is like having kids on board. Board in minutes and wanting off the boat.

I know man. I have owned many beautiful bird dogs in the past. The last one I owned was a beautiful English Pointer that I imported from Ireland, she was killed by a truck and I buried her by the beaver pond. It's taken a long time to get over her.

But I think I am ready now.
