Default Rem 700 Action Specs

If my recall is correct, the rear base mounting height is lower than the front ... anyone know the drop...and is the contour the same?

The bridge is lower and the radius is not the same. The difference in height I don’t know off the top of my head but can get it.

Unless it's older than 1974 in which case the rear ridge is .067 lower than the front ring.

Then I measured a set of bases that are out of spec.

Measure 10 different actions and you will get 10 different heights.
As for the radius of the rear bridge I’ve read it supposed to be 1.94” but again if you run a dial indicator over it, it rarely is. Infact the radius is almost never symmetrical side to side either. Whether true or not I can’t say, but I’ve also read remington polishes the actions by hand on a belt grinder which would certainly explain the discrepancies.

Winchester is worse. The older new ones anyway.

It’s a strange design choice, it would have been less work to leave it round, and would have been so much easier to keep rings aligned.
Perhaps there was some big advantage to the lower bridge...?
