I didn't have to go on the ice. It's melted out into the reeds along the edge.

Are you trapping the banks and putting the traps right in the runs now, Pointer? I'm putting out 22 colony traps tomorrow afternoon and a couple of funnel traps if I find good spots. Going to be wearing hip waders so I'm not venturing too far out.

It's going to be a week or two before I can do culverts around here. It's way, way too high and running too fast. The slew it is!

even 12" of rotten ice is bad. venturing out onto the ice this time of year is a bad idea. not only falling through, but losing traps as well. especially if its open around the edges. why risk it.

That's why I stick to the shore where it's only max waist deep

PM sent wrt colony traps.....I have some 6"x6"x30" (or smaller if you want) ready to bend and clip that I can sell you.

I shot a couple of rats today putting out some traps. I'm thinking that I should have made some floating traps, they were swimming everywhere.

Floating sets have been good for me so far this year . Got a small problem , I don't have enough stretchers and have some rats that I need to skin , NOW ! Can I just put these fresh hides in a fridge over night till I have stretchers or should they be frozen ?

Skin the rats out, roll them up skin on skin (fur out). Freeze a dozen per bag and vaccum pack. Take out as needed after that to keep stretchers full. I will run 50 stretchers constantly in fall, and freeze all excess rats that I don't have a stretcher for.

Perfect timing Peter! I was going to PM you to see if I could get a picture of your floats.....Perfect! I'm trapping a lake/slew the similar size as what's in your pictures except that there's about 300m of cattails all the way around it and I'm making floaters for my 120's tomorrow morning. I'm going to have to tie them to a brick though because the bottom is still frozen. Thanks for posting, that helps me a lot.

What thickness and length of foam did you use on the bottom of the floats?

Do you guys eat the meat? I remember eating the meat and my mom used to bake the tails to a crisp and we would devour those things...

Deadly weapon this time of year for those sun worshipping rats, and cheap and easy to build,4x8 sheet of 3/8 plywood makes 16 pieces 10"x24",then 1x2 lats on sides and 1 inch styrafoam on the bottom, drilled a 2 1/2 hole in centre for stake, hope this helps Pointer.
