So, after observing the buck for the last few months, and seeing him on Monday evening carrying both antlers...I was slightly surprised to see him come walking out of the trees yesterday afternoon without his right antler. He kind of looked lopsided...and maybe even a bit embarrassed... he came in without his usual swagger and with ears drooping a bit...or so it seemed... It was almost as if he was embarrassed to be half the buck he was previously!!! lol
He fed with the other deer for 10 minutes or so before a passing grader spooked them and the whole herd ran off. Here are a few pics of him with only one antler...

Approximately 1 hour after he ran off, he showed up again and joined some of the other deer that had already come back in. This time though, he was completely bald. The only thing left on his head is the fresh divot where the antler had been.

This buck had been quite docile towards the other deer all winter...and they generally gave him his space if he moved their way. But the first thing he did when he came in without antlers...was to put an aggressive run on all the other deer already feeding. It was almost like he was trying to prove to them...and maybe even himself...that he was still "boss of the food pile"!!! lol

And then this morning, with a couple inches of new snow on the ground and a bit of drifting from last night's wind...I figured I'd take a quick walk on the trails leading back to the trees. I was thinking that maybe the one antler got jarred off when they ran off after the grader came by.
Sure enough, right around a corner of trees where I last saw him running away yesterday...and lost sight of him as he went behind some willows...I could see tines above the fresh snow.

Great finds, 6mm rem. First elk shed posted this season, I believe.
Icecap, I hope you find that other side. It is worth it looking for it.
Northbuck with great writing and photos, like always. Still can't believe they were armored this late in spring.
Hopefully, I will be able to get out a little bit next weekend. Things are pretty busy though at work and at home.
Snow is melting fast!!! And it is going to hit close to 20 above zero this coming week. All snow will be gone before the week is over

Awesome job 6mm rem, I logged 12K up some steep stuff in search of what would be my first elk sheds. TONS of sign, but the boot tracks everywhere I went was disappointing.

Snow sure went down quick in my area over the last 10 days or so! And the deer finally dispersed to greener pastures...literally.. so I got a chance to walk a little deeper into the bedding areas.
First antler I found when I entered the woods was the match to the shed I posted pics of the last time...

I ended finding 4 more little sheds in the couple hours I was out to bring the afternoon total to 5...but couldn't take pics as I had drained the camera battery taking too many grouse pics!!!

The next day, I had a couple more free hours ...
Spotted this one sticking out of the ice on a stock pond...

There was 15' or so of open water...and then 15' or so of ice between me and that shed....
When there's a will...there's a way! I used my Canadian Tire kayak to skim across the ice and managed to retrieved it.

And then I found this one in the middle of a cutline that had 6" of water flowing down it. What I was reminded again on this day was that "water resistant" boots are definitely not the same as "waterproof"!!!! It seems that I "re-learn" that one each and every spring when the thaw hits...

Another quick walk in the same woods today...
Found one in a shaded spot that still had remnants of snow...

Then I found this obvious one on my way back to the truck...in a classic bedding spot...south facing wood line with thick cover to the back. I have found many a shed in such a place...where those bucks bed and absorb the sun's rays as it swings across...

Great stuff, northbuck! Now that snow is finally gone, I will not able to get out for the next couple of weekends, at least. Still numberring zero for the year, lol.
Lol at the canoe stuff. When there is a will, there is a way, that's for sure.
Never trust water resistant stuff. That is why I don't really have any anymore with the exception of a wind proof jacket or two.
P.S. So have the bucks you mentioned in your previous posts a few weeks ago finally dropped it?

got out on Saturday again, Nothing. Deer did not over winter on my usual good spots. Nice to get out in the sunshine with my family though. 11month old in a pack and 3 yr old on my shoulders when walking was too much.

I woke up early this morning and had a couple hours available before I needed to go work so...a quick cup of coffee and head out for a quick hike...
Beautiful morning...geese and swans were flying overhead and making plenty of vocalisations. And the ruffies were going hard this morning... had at least 4 drumming in the woodlot I was walking. I managed to see all but one of these four go through their little sequence on their drumming log...always fun to watch.
Conditions for shed hunting are near perfect right now in my neck of the woods...snow is mostly all gone, so is much of the water (at least compared to just a few days ago), and the forest floor is dark.

One of the things I really enjoy is the various wildlife I get to see while looking for sheds. In this particular bush...lots of spruce...consequently many red squirrels scampering about...

There are also other things one finds back in the woods other than sheds...especially around old homesteads. Always find these various objects interesting...a look into past times...

^ Great stuff, man! And great photos! Watching wildlife is a big part of shed hunting for me: if I get to see something really cool, I could not care less if I find any sheds or not, actually.
I am working late and too busy on weekends to get out. Hopefully, the weekend after this coming one. Sucks that the floor will probably green up by then.
I am curious, when did those late bucks end up shedding?
