tally me banana
Speaking to some walleye types last summer, I heard that eating babanas in the boat is not good for fishing. Was that nonsense? Private joke? Urban legend? Can anyone enlighten me?

Nevef heard that, but now I know. Puting banana peels around your campsite helps keep the bloodsuckers away.

I learnt that in Alaska when we tried to get on our fishing charter with a couple bananas for breakfast. Captain made us throw them out.
Think there was an episode of Mythbusters where the did a test and I guess when you handle a banana and then touch the lure, something from the banana acts a repellent for fish.

So peanut butter and banana sandwiches are the reason I never caught fish with the kids in the boat. Now that its bologna and mustard on white bread I have increased my success rate 100%

Must be an ancient Alaskan wisdom passed in generations.
I've known about not wishing luck before the trip (that actually works), not having sex just before the trip and now this - NO bananas when fishing in Alaska too...

No bananas
Big time bad luck..... Ever seen a fishing charter with a boat named "no bananas"... ..... I had a guide out on the coast ask to see my banana at lunch ( before I knew of this tale) I curiously handed him my banana and watched him throw it overboard haha..... Although if u plan on getting sea sick take a banana and peanut butter sandwich .... Peanut butter and banana taste the same going down as coming up haha

I seen a lot of no banana signs when we were in Hawaii and asked one of the local fishermen why they are bad luck and was given this response:
"The polynesians fishermen of the islands used to walk by the kings banana orchards on their way to their boats every day. The bananas were always ripe and delicious looking, but they were not allowed to eat them because they were property of the king. One day one of the fishermen forgot to bring their meal and took some banana's from the orchard. He raved about how good they were and soon after the other fishermen were taking bananas out fishing with them because they were delicious. The king found out that the fishermen were doing this and sent out his shaman to curse the boats to punish the fishermen for taking his bananas. The fishermen there after could not catch any fish and they and their families starved because of their deeds. Hence why bananas are bad luck on fishing boats."
This is one interpretation from the islands, hope you enjoy.

There are many theories on why people believe bananas are bad luck for a boat. One superstition is that boats carrying bananas don't catch fish. The origin of this belief dates back to the Caribbean trade of the 1700s. The wooden sailing boats of that time had to move quickly to deliver bananas before they spoiled, and fishermen had a hard time trolling for fish on such fast-moving boats, which is how the superstition came about. Another superstition that originated during that time is that bananas will cause a boat to sink. This belief developed after many boats never made it to their destinations, and all of the doomed boats were carrying bananas.
One of the creepier superstitions is that banana cargo could actually kill a man. In actuality, fermenting bananas do give off methane gas, which could conceivably get trapped below deck and kill any crew members unlucky enough to be working in the hold. Another popular theory was that venomous spiders hitched rides in bananas, and once those bananas were onboard, the boat would be host to any number of lethal critters. And then, of course, there's the theory that banana peels cause crew members to slip and fall on deck [source: Attah].

This is a very bizarre forum!
Btw, I am never edgy or twitchy or lethargical.

For some reason this superstition abounds in the charter fleet. Whether you are offshore west coast, Great Lakes, Hawaii or down in the Tropics...Captains don't like bananas. People put them on other people's boats as a joke.
I have never seen any fact in it...but most lodges won't stock bananas for fear of bad mojo.

I heard one about large amounts of bananas being transported, and sometimes tarantulas would be in the bananas and would eventually wonder around the ship biting people, hence bananas on the boat being bad luck...that's just one story

So if I got this right, I should not make eye contact while having sex and eating a banana in a boat just before fishing. If I stay away from this practice I will catch more fish.
I new I was doing something wrong all these years.
Gonna miss eating that banana.
