Default Using fish eggs as bait

I caught a nice 18"rainbow on sunday. She was full of eggs. They can be used as bait. Ive never tried them before (only fished for trout this winter seriously). Has anyone had any good success using eggs? I have probably a half a cup.

Used eggs all the time back in Ontario, both rainbow and salmon, when and where legal to do so. Rainbow / steelhead really like 'em!

The trick is preserving them to last and not get stinky. Lots of info online how to do it.

They can be used as chunks cut from the skein, but if ya tie small 'bunches' in 'spawn sacks' they stay on the hook a lot better.

I've used roe for catching Salmon and Lake Whites back in BC a time or two.

Is there such a thing as 'spawn sacks ' that are purpose made and available? I wouldn't mind trying that.

It is a mesh material you can get at most fishing stores. Just stick a small ball of eggs in the mesh, wrap it up and tie it off. Good to go.

The old lady's nylon stockings work great. Just form a ball by putting an amount of eggs the size of the bait you desire on a spot in the nylons twisting the nylons around the roe to form a ball and then tie it off with thread and snip off the ball with scissors. Walla a bait that just oozes scent and holds together better than the commercial because the material is elasticized, It is messy so you may want to use rubber gloves

From the regs P 24 "It Is Unlawful To: Release live fish or live fish eggs into any waters except back to the waters from which they were caught."

P 28 "Parts of Game Fish. Only the skin, fins, eyes and dead eggs of game fish may be used as bait, provided these fish were lawfully caught by angling."

So make sure the eggs are dead and you should be good to g

Any method of preservation would render them "dead"

They are delicious as caviar. Yes, rainbow trout eggs. Instructions online.

They work well as bait for trout, and probably any other fish.
