Default Am I nuts?

So I sit here in the Australian desert at +38*C and all I can think about is getting back to Canada and doing some ice fishing.

Is there something wrong with me? Most people want to get away from the cold and to the heat in the winter time but me I want to put myself on a frozen lake and try to catch fish while hopefully not freezing my azz off.

Yes, you are nuts!

Seriously though, what are you doing in Australia?

Working working working! Couldn't get a job in Alberta so I went overseas. Guess no one wants a well tester with management exp. and 15 yrs in the field in Canada.

Anyways liking it over here no stress (except the possible heat stress) and I get away from the -40*C for most of the winter. Plus I get 24 days off in Canada where I don't even have to answer my cell phone at all if it isn't the woman calling!

Yes you are nuts. Get a rod and hit the ocean out there. Lots of variety of fish to be caught and most of them will taste great on the bbq.

Just don't fall in. Some of the fish they have over there will eat you for breakfast.

If the temp were +30 C I'd say yeah, you're nuts. But at +38 C I totally understand the urge for the chill. It would take that much discomfort to make me want to sit on a frozen lake staring at a hole all day. I know a lot of you love it, but I can't think of a more boring way to pass an hour.

Nope your not nuts, I am sitting here hoping to get a bit of snow soon for tracking, then after Nov. 30 it can freeze over completely so I can sit on the ICE.

Not sure what part of the desert you are in or if you are close to a coastline but there are some awesome fishing to be found there. I spent about 5 months straight, fishing almost everyday when I was living there (gawd I miss those carefee days). If you are close to the shore, there's big flathead, whiting, bream, small (and large!) sharks to be caught, among numerous other things. If you are allowed, pick up a crab pot and try to catch some some AWESOME mud crabs, they make the crabs here taste like...well mud. Or get some fresh blue crabs, they are almost even better. Get a cast net, learn how to use it and go prawning or catch your own live bait. If you are up north, try for some Barramudi, they're better tasting and fighters compared to our walleye.

If you're in the middle of the desert without a sea or river to be found, then sorry mate you are kinda out of luck. The heat of the desert can get to you after a while so I understand the wanting of sitting in a shack on 3 feet of ice, hell I'm in the same position, I've got my hard water gear out and I know it's another 2 months before I can use it

Joe, any relation to John. I think I would miss ice fishing too, but that would soon go away when fishing the ocean.

It's sad you weren't able to find yourself decent employment over here, especially with the experience you have. On the bright side, it sounds like you managed to work yourself out a fairly sweet deal anyway

Not crazy - it would take a thousand horses to pull me off the hardwater for this...

But I love Canada - wouldn't leave it for the world

LOL well I think it is pretty cheap as they are considered pests here, so you find the right locals and buy the beer and I am sure they would take you out for a roo shoot.
